TV host Riyah Abdul has criticised Delta State Governor’s aide, Ossai Success, over his decision to offer financial support and other benefits to the young woman involved in the recent incident with businessman Tony Elumelu.
Ossai had offered the woman ₦500,000 in cash, a trip to Asaba, hotel accommodation, VIP access to the fourth edition of the Delta Social Media Summit and an opportunity to become an ambassador for the annual event.
The offer came after a video involving the woman and Elumelu attracted attention. The woman, who was at a UBA graduate training programme during the incident, had addressed Elumelu by his first name.
Rather than viewing Ossai’s intervention as necessary support, Abdul questioned his decision to get involved and expressed concerns about his conduct as a government official.
The TV host argued that the issue was not an isolated case and said Ossai’s repeated public interventions had become a source of embarrassment for the Delta State Government.
“If you ask me, I think the Delta State Government should start thinking about replacing Mr. Success because he always brings shame at every point. This is not the first time. If it was the first time, I would have let it slide,” she said.
Abdul also challenged Ossai to pay greater attention to his responsibilities as a government aide instead of becoming involved in issues that attract public attention.
“You have a job. Why don't you focus on that? Why are you always trying to trend?” she added.
Ossai, in announcing his offer, had presented it as an effort to support the young woman following the criticism surrounding the incident. He said he did not believe she should continue to face harsh treatment and wanted to give her an opportunity to turn the experience into something positive.
His proposed package goes beyond the cash support. The woman would also receive flight tickets to Asaba, five-star hotel accommodation, a guided tour of developmental projects in Delta State and VIP access to the social media summit scheduled for August 27.
Ossai further offered her a brand ambassador position for the Delta Social Media Summit, which he described as an annual platform.
He also appealed to anyone who knows the woman to ask her to contact him directly, saying he wanted to give her a chance to tell her story.
While Ossai’s gesture was framed as an attempt to support the young woman after the incident, Abdul’s criticism has shifted attention to the conduct of the governor’s aide and whether his approach to public issues is appropriate for someone holding an official government position.
The disagreement has therefore developed into a separate conversation about the responsibilities of public officials, their conduct online and the extent to which they should involve themselves in controversies involving private individuals.
