Music executive Ubi Franklin has claimed he possesses a technology he believes could help tackle the recurring flooding crisis in Lagos by restoring the flow of water through blocked drainage channels.

Franklin made the claim while recounting his personal experience during a severe flooding incident that left parts of Lagos submerged and vehicles stranded in floodwater.

According to him, the situation became particularly alarming when he returned to his office and discovered that floodwater had risen to a dangerous level around his Mercedes-Benz C300.

He said he had initially left the area in his Prado, but by the time he returned, the flood had worsened considerably.

“I had left the office in my Prado, but when I returned, the water had already reached the engine level,” Franklin said.

The music executive said the incident made him realise that flooding in the state was not only linked to heavy rainfall but was also aggravated by blocked drainage systems and developments that obstruct the natural flow of water.

He recalled that when workers arrived at the office on the following Monday, they discovered that construction activities along the road had affected several drainage channels.

Franklin also referred to the environmental sanitation exercise observed in Lagos, where residents are expected to spend the last Saturday of every month cleaning their surroundings and drainage channels.

However, he suggested that more technological solutions may be required to address the scale of the flooding problem facing the state.

He said he was prepared to present his proposed solution to the Lagos State Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, if given the opportunity.

“I have something that, if Tokunbo, the commissioner, is ready, I can sit with him and discuss. All the gullies in Lagos will be opened. I have it; it’s a technology,” he said.

Franklin further claimed that the technology could improve the movement of water through drainage channels across the state.

“There’s a technology I have that will open up all the gullies in Lagos and ensure free flow of water,” he added.

His comments come amid continuing concerns over flooding in Lagos, particularly during periods of intense rainfall, when blocked drainage channels, construction on waterways and inadequate water flow can worsen the impact on roads, homes and businesses.

Franklin did not provide technical details about the technology, identify its developers or explain how it would be deployed across the state.

His claim, however, has drawn attention to the need for stronger measures to keep drainage channels clear and prevent activities that obstruct established water routes.

The music executive's account also highlights the financial and personal losses that can follow severe flooding, with vehicles, offices and other properties vulnerable when water levels rise rapidly.
