Doris Ogala Promises To Secure Nnamdi Kanu’s Release If Elected Abia Governor

The 2027 Abia State governorship contest is already taking shape, with actress and African Action Congress (AAC) candidate Doris Ogala putting the continued detention of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the centre of her campaign message.

Ogala, who is seeking to become the next governor of Abia State, said she would make Kanu’s release her first priority if she secures the mandate of the people at the 2027 election.

“If Abia State votes for me as their next governor in 2027, the first thing I will do is secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Ogala said.

The statement adds a major political dimension to the race as candidates begin to position themselves ahead of the election. Ogala is challenging incumbent Governor Alex Otti, who is expected to seek another term in office after winning the 2023 governorship election.

Rather than focusing solely on the conventional issues of infrastructure, economic development and governance, Ogala’s declaration places Kanu’s case firmly within her political agenda.

Kanu, an Abia-born separatist leader, has remained a major figure in political discussions across the South-East. His arrest, prosecution and continued detention over charges connected to his agitation for an independent Biafra have attracted widespread attention and generated repeated calls for his release.

The issue has particularly resonated in Abia, where Kanu hails from Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area. Over the years, his legal battle has drawn reactions from political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups and supporters across the region.

For Ogala, the matter now forms a central part of her pitch to Abia voters as she prepares to contest for the state’s highest political office under the AAC.

The actress-turned-politician will be looking to build support beyond her entertainment background as she takes on a sitting governor in what is expected to be a closely watched political contest.

Otti, who was elected on the platform of the Labour Party in 2023, defeated the then incumbent Peoples Democratic Party candidate Okey Ahiwe and other contenders to become governor. His administration will be seeking to consolidate its record as the 2027 election approaches.

Ogala’s emergence adds another voice to the growing field of politicians seeking to influence the direction of Abia State after 2027. Her decision to make Kanu’s release an immediate priority could also make the issue a prominent subject of debate during the campaign.

With political parties and aspirants expected to intensify their mobilisation ahead of the election, voters will ultimately decide whether Ogala’s promise resonates strongly enough to propel her to the Government House.

For now, the AAC candidate has made her position clear: if she wins the Abia governorship in 2027, securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu will be at the top of her agenda.
