Veteran Nigerian actress Joke Silva has called for greater government support for people working in the country’s creative industries, particularly during the early stages of developing films and other artistic projects.
Speaking at the QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit 2.0 in Lagos, Silva said many creatives require financial assistance before their projects can begin generating revenue.
She argued that grants, rather than loans, are better suited to the development stage because writers and creators may spend months researching, developing and refining an idea before production begins.
According to the actress, investment at the scriptwriting stage can improve the quality of Nigerian productions.
She noted that writers may need professional researchers, script consultants and dramaturgs to strengthen their stories, but many cannot afford these services without financial backing.
Silva also drew attention to the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage. Referring to Glover Memorial Hall, a historic venue where she and her team work, she called for improvements to the surrounding environment on Lagos Island.
She particularly expressed concern about the condition of Tinubu Square, saying the area’s monuments and historical features are being obscured by congestion, commercial activities and poor environmental conditions.
Another major issue raised by the actress was intellectual property protection. She said piracy continues to deprive filmmakers, musicians and other creatives of substantial income, despite the enormous audience for Nigerian entertainment across Africa and the global Black community.
Silva urged the government to enforce existing intellectual property and anti-piracy laws more effectively.
She argued that stronger enforcement would allow creators to receive more of the revenue generated from their work and reduce the financial leakages affecting the industry.
She also called for greater attention to Nigeria’s film co-production agreement with Brazil, saying clearer implementation could create opportunities for filmmakers.
