Country music has lost one of its most recognisable and influential figures, with legendary singer, songwriter and actress Dolly Parton dying at the age of 80.
Parton died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee, after a brief battle with cancer, according to a statement from her team. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death in an emotional video shared on social media.
Seaver described the moment as one filled with both pride and sadness, reflecting on the enormous impact his aunt had on her family, music and millions of fans around the world.
A Remarkable Career Spanning Six Decades
Born on January 19, 1946, in Tennessee, Parton grew up in a large family and experienced poverty during her childhood. She was the fourth of 12 children and was raised in a modest home near the Little Pigeon River.
Despite her humble beginnings, Parton developed a passion for music from an early age. She began performing publicly as a child and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville when she was just 13.
After completing high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional musician and songwriter.
Her debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly, was released in 1967 and marked the beginning of a career that would eventually make her one of the best-selling female artists in music history.
‘Jolene’ And ‘I Will Always Love You’
Parton became famous for her extraordinary songwriting ability, creating some of the most enduring songs in country music.
Among her best-known works are “Jolene”, “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You”.
“I Will Always Love You” became particularly significant in her career. Parton originally wrote and recorded the song following her professional separation from country singer Porter Wagoner.

Away from entertainment, Parton built an impressive business empire, most notably through Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park she helped acquire and rename in 1986.

Through the Dollywood Foundation, she established the Imagination Library, a programme that provides books to children to encourage early literacy. The initiative eventually expanded internationally and became one of her most recognised philanthropic efforts.
Parton also supported medical research, disaster relief and numerous charitable causes. In 2020, she donated $1 million towards COVID-19 vaccine research, contributing to work associated with the Moderna vaccine.
Final Years
Parton’s death comes months after the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, whom she married in 1966. Dean died in March 2025 at the age of 82 after almost six decades of marriage.
In the months before her death, Parton had spoken publicly about health challenges and reduced some of her appearances. Her team later confirmed that she had been battling cancer before her death.
