Nollywood is preparing for an ambitious cinema event as Black Market, a new crime thriller featuring Lateef Adedimeji and Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, gets ready for a major premiere in Lagos.
The movie is scheduled to be unveiled on September 26 at Tafawa Balewa Square, where organisers are planning a gathering of about 50,000 people.
Beyond celebrating the film, the event is designed to make an attempt at breaking a long-standing Guinness World Records mark for the largest attendance at a film screening at a single location.
The organisers are targeting a figure significantly higher than the existing record of 43,624 attendees. That record was established in 2015 during the premiere of Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena in the Philippines.
A successful attempt in Lagos would therefore put a Nigerian film event in the global spotlight and create another notable milestone for the country’s entertainment industry.
Black Market centres on characters whose lives become connected through an international smuggling operation.
The story explores themes including loyalty, survival and the difficult choices people make when they become involved in activities outside the law. Its crime-focused storyline is expected to give audiences a different kind of Nollywood experience while placing the cast in intense and dramatic situations.
The project was produced by Rixel Studios alongside FilmOne Entertainment and Signet Ring Studios. Its cast combines established names with younger performers, including Itele D Icon, Scarlet Gomez, Omowunmi Dada and Uzor Arukwe.
The presence of such a broad ensemble has added to interest surrounding the film ahead of its public unveiling.
Fatimah Binta Gimsay directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed. For Gimsay, the production represents another step in her filmmaking career.
She has previously worked on Nigerian television productions and directed Lowkey Adults, released in 2025. She has described the process of bringing Black Market from different script versions to its final form as a rewarding creative experience.
The scale of the planned premiere has also attracted major partners, including MTN, Puma, Swoop, Oraimo and Shuttlers, as well as support from the Lagos State Ministry of Culture.
Their involvement highlights the considerable organisation required to host an event involving tens of thousands of people at one venue.
If the attendance target is achieved and the attempt meets Guinness World Records requirements, the premiere could become one of the most significant large-scale events associated with a Nollywood production.
It would also demonstrate the growing ability of Nigeria’s film industry to combine entertainment with ambitious cultural and international projects.
For now, attention will remain on September 26, when filmmakers, actors, industry stakeholders and thousands of movie lovers are expected to converge in Lagos.
Black Market’s premiere is not simply being presented as a film launch, but as an attempt to create a record-breaking moment for Nollywood.
