Being Invited Into Someone’s Home Isn’t Consent to Film — Emeka Nwagbaraocha

Nollywood actor and content creator Emeka Nwagbaraocha has called on social media creators to respect the privacy of people whose homes they visit, particularly when they want to record videos or create content within private spaces.

The actor raised the concern over what he described as the growing habit of visitors turning other people’s homes into filming locations without first seeking approval from their hosts.

In a message shared with his followers, Nwagbaraocha expressed his displeasure with the practice, making it clear that being welcomed into someone’s home does not automatically give a visitor the right to record whatever they want.

According to him, people should understand that a private residence remains a personal space, regardless of whether the owner is a public figure or someone who regularly shares aspects of their life online.

He particularly appealed to content creators to exercise caution before bringing out their phones or cameras to record videos while visiting friends, colleagues or acquaintances.

Nwagbaraocha stressed that asking for permission should be considered a basic part of showing respect to a host. He argued that a person’s willingness to welcome visitors should not be interpreted as consent for their home to be used as a backdrop for social media content.

The actor also highlighted the situation involving people who are themselves content creators. 

He suggested that creators should be even more mindful when recording inside the homes of colleagues who use their own spaces for personal or professional content.

His comments point to the importance of understanding the difference between a public location and a private home.

While social media has made it common for people to document their everyday activities, Nwagbaraocha believes that the desire to produce engaging content should not override basic boundaries.

He maintained that creators can still make entertaining and engaging videos without disregarding the wishes of the people whose spaces they are using.

The actor’s message also touches on the wider issue of consent in the age of social media, where recording and sharing moments can happen within seconds. 

What may appear harmless to one person could be uncomfortable or intrusive to another, particularly when it involves their private residence.

Nwagbaraocha therefore urged visitors to communicate with their hosts before filming and to respect any decision they make.

His position is that an invitation into someone’s home should come with an understanding that the space deserves the same level of respect as the person who owns or occupies it.

The actor’s warning has drawn attention to the need for greater consideration among content creators, especially as the demand for social media videos continues to grow.

For Nwagbaraocha, the simple act of asking for permission before recording can prevent unnecessary misunderstandings and help maintain healthy relationships between hosts and their guests.
