Lagos is set to host the second edition of WAKE UP!, a contemporary art and photography exhibition designed to celebrate the creativity, experiences and cultural influence of young Nigerians.
The exhibition, titled “Young, Wild, Free,” will open on September 5, 2026, at Angel and Muse Gallery in Ikoyi and run until September 11.
It is curated by Awele Onwordi, who has positioned the exhibition as a platform for examining how young Nigerians use creativity to respond to the realities of everyday life.
Rather than focusing solely on conventional forms of visual art, WAKE UP! 2 will bring together different elements of contemporary youth culture.
Music, fashion, photography, skateboarding, art and community will feature prominently throughout the exhibition, creating a broader picture of how young Nigerians express themselves and build identities.
The exhibition also seeks to acknowledge the difficult circumstances facing many young people in the country.
Economic pressures, limited opportunities and wider social and political challenges have become part of the environment in which a new generation of creatives is developing.
According to the organisers, the featured works will demonstrate how Nigerian youths continue to find ways to remain innovative and expressive despite these challenges. Through their artistic practices, the participants will examine issues surrounding identity, storytelling, street culture and contemporary life.
Artists and creative groups expected to participate include DENCITY and SUPERGLIDER HOUSE, alongside Ajilore Kehinde, Chuka Onwordi, ZIDYEP, Franklyn Okoye, Awele Onwordi, Oluchi Kogolo and Kozetuo Apeji.
Their contributions will span both digital and traditional approaches to art, reflecting the changing ways in which contemporary Nigerian creatives produce and communicate their ideas.
In her curatorial statement, Onwordi described Nigerian youth as an important force in shaping the country’s cultural landscape. She pointed to areas such as music, fashion, art, photography, skateboarding, raves and community as spaces where young people continue to influence popular culture.
The exhibition is therefore intended not only as an artistic showcase but also as a celebration of youth expression and resilience. It aims to provide visibility for creatives while encouraging conversations around the experiences and aspirations of a generation navigating significant social and economic pressures.
WAKE UP! 2 follows the success of the exhibition’s first edition, which took place at Angels and Muse in Lagos from March 21 to 28, 2026.
The inaugural show brought together eight emerging Nigerian creatives and explored themes connected to youth culture, personal experiences, digital influence and evolving identities.
With its second edition, WAKE UP! seeks to build on that foundation by placing Nigerian youth and street culture at the centre of a wider conversation about creativity, identity and contemporary society.
