Working with Mr Ibu Was Always Unpredictable - Uche Jombo

Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Uche Jombo has opened up about what it was like sharing movie sets with comic legends John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, and Francis Odega, revealing that both actors were famous for bringing their own unique style to scenes through improvisation.

Speaking during a recent interview, Jombo explained that working alongside the duo required actors to remain focused and adaptable because they often introduced unscripted lines that changed the flow of a scene. 

According to her, performers who relied entirely on memorised dialogue could easily become confused by the unexpected twists the comedians added during filming.

The actress said she was able to keep up because she enjoys spontaneous acting and is comfortable reacting naturally to situations. 

She noted that this skill helped her stay in character even when scenes took an entirely different direction from what had originally been written.

Jombo described both actors as exceptionally talented entertainers whose ability to improvise made every production more exciting. 

While their approach sometimes caught fellow cast members off guard, she said it also brought a level of authenticity and humour that audiences appreciated.

Reflecting on her experience, the actress explained that anyone preparing to work with Francis Odega or the late Mr Ibu had to expect surprises on set.

 She added that being mentally prepared was just as important as learning the script because the pair constantly found creative ways to make scenes more entertaining.

Mr Ibu, whose real name was John Okafor, was one of Nigeria's most celebrated comic actors. Throughout his career, he became a household name for his humorous roles in numerous Nollywood productions that earned him widespread admiration across Africa. 

His passing in March 2024 marked the end of an era for Nigerian comedy, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire younger actors.

Francis Odega has also built a successful career as one of Nollywood's most recognisable comic performers. 

Beyond Nigeria, he gained international popularity after several clips from his films went viral on social media, introducing his distinctive acting style to audiences around the world.

Uche Jombo, who has spent decades in the Nigerian film industry as an actress, producer and screenwriter, remains one of Nollywood's respected figures. 

Her reflections offer a glimpse into the creativity and unpredictability that often define film production, particularly when working with gifted comedians known for thinking beyond the script. 

She believes that such moments, although challenging, often result in memorable performances that leave a lasting impression on viewers and contribute to the enduring appeal of Nollywood films.
