Media personality Toke Makinwa has drawn a firm line when it comes to money in relationships, saying she has never dated a man who asked her for financial help and doesn't intend to stay with one who ever does.

The TV host made the remark during a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, where she sat down with reality TV star Mercy Eke. As the conversation turned to women financially supporting their partners, Makinwa admitted that she often finds herself wondering why she has never had that experience.

She stated:

“When I hear women say these things, I sit down and I ask myself, why don’t men ask me for money? Men don’t ask me for money.”

She said it has always stood out to her because she regularly hears women talk about being expected to help their partners financially. Looking back at her own relationships, however, she said that has never been the case.

Trying to explain why, Makinwa jokingly suggested that perhaps she unknowingly discourages anyone from asking by talking about her own challenges first whenever someone checks on her.

She said:

“Maybe there is something on my head. Maybe because before you ask me, I’m already giving you all my problems? As soon as you say how are you? Today I have a headache.’ Maybe that’s why.”

Although she laughed about it, she maintained that none of the men she has dated, including those who were not financially comfortable, ever turned to her for money. According to her, they were more willing to give than to ask.

“I’ve never dated a guy who has ever asked me for money. Even if I date a broke guy, he earns 5K, at least 3K out of that money he’ll give it to me”.

Makinwa said she considers herself fortunate that she has never found herself in that situation. For her, a partner asking for financial assistance is not something she is prepared to entertain, regardless of the circumstances.

“I’m thankful for that grace though, because I’ve never, ever, ever dated a guy that has confidently asked me for money. The day you do, you’ll never hear from me again.”

Her comments made it clear that she has a personal standard when it comes to finances in a relationship. While she acknowledged that every couple has their own way of handling money, she believes asking her for financial support crosses a boundary she has no intention of changing.

The discussion also highlighted how differently people approach money and relationships. For some couples, supporting each other financially is a normal part of building a life together. For Makinwa, however, that is not the kind of relationship she wants. In her view, once a man feels comfortable asking her for money, the relationship has reached a point where she would rather walk away than continue.

By the end of the conversation, she left no room for doubt about where she stands. Her message was simple and direct: asking her for money is a deal breaker, and if that day ever comes, she believes the relationship has already come to an end.
