Veteran Nollywood actress Bose Aregbesola has opened up about one of the most persistent misconceptions surrounding her career, revealing that many people still believe she is married to fellow actor Segun Ogungbe because of the numerous husband-and-wife roles they played together in Yoruba movies.
The actress made the revelation during an interview with actress and television host Biola Bayo, where she reflected on her acting journey, her late husband, and the challenges of building a career in Nollywood.
According to Aregbesola, years after appearing alongside Ogungbe in several romantic productions, members of the public continue to mistake their on-screen relationship for a real-life marriage.
On-Screen Chemistry Sparked Real-Life Assumptions
Explaining how the misunderstanding began, Aregbesola said she and Segun Ogungbe frequently portrayed married couples in numerous films, making audiences believe their relationship extended beyond the movie set.
She noted that their repeated collaborations created such convincing chemistry that many fans struggled to separate fiction from reality.
“To this day, people still think I am the wife of Segun Ogungbe. They will say Segun’s wife. I am tired of having to explain myself. When I go to parties, they still ask about him. They will say, ‘How about your husband?’ We did the work back-to-back, and played the lead. We played the role of a couple in all.
“That really helped me. God blessed me through him, and I appreciate it.”
Despite the misunderstanding, the actress expressed gratitude to Ogungbe, acknowledging that their successful partnership on screen contributed significantly to her growth and visibility in the Yoruba film industry.
Remembering Her Late Husband
Beyond discussing her career, Aregbesola also reflected on her personal life, paying tribute to her late husband, whom she described as a loving and supportive partner.
She explained that throughout their marriage, her husband trusted her completely despite the demands of her profession and the rumours that occasionally surrounded her work as an actress.
According to her, many people attempted to create misunderstandings between them, but his confidence in her remained unshaken.
Trust Held Their Marriage Together
Recalling one particular incident, Aregbesola said an anonymous caller once contacted her husband with false claims that she was in a hotel.
Rather than believing the accusation, her husband chose to trust her, strengthening their relationship instead of allowing suspicion to create division.
“People will say your husband trusts you. One day, someone called him from a hidden number, saying I was in a hotel. A man’s trust is something that’s important. He is someone that likes our work. When I’m called for work, even if it’s midnight, he has driven me there.”
She described his unwavering confidence as one of the foundations of their marriage, explaining that he understood the nature of the entertainment industry and consistently supported her career.
A Marriage Cut Short
The actress disclosed that although her family experienced various challenges over the years, none of them were serious enough to threaten their marriage.
Instead, she said the greatest tragedy came unexpectedly when her husband became ill.
“A lot had happened in our marriage that could have separated us. We had no problems in our marriage until he passed away. The sickness lasted for just seven days.”
The emotional revelation highlighted the sudden nature of his passing, with Aregbesola explaining that the illness claimed his life within only one week.
Despite the painful loss, she continues to remember him as someone who believed in her dreams and stood beside her throughout her acting career.
Advice For Actors In Today’s Nollywood
Speaking about the current state of the Nigerian movie industry, Aregbesola observed that Nollywood has become increasingly competitive, making it more difficult for actors to secure regular opportunities.
She encouraged practitioners to remain humble and thankful whenever they receive acting roles.
“God should help us in our profession. The industry is saturated. So, appreciate it if you’re seen.”
According to the actress, the rapid growth of the industry means that many talented performers now compete for limited opportunities, making gratitude and consistency more important than ever.
Her comments reflect the realities facing many actors as Nollywood continues to expand while welcoming new talents into the profession.
Even with changing trends in the industry, Aregbesola remains grateful for the opportunities that shaped her career and for the memorable roles that continue to keep her in the hearts of audiences, even if they sometimes mistake fiction for reality.
