United Bank for Africa (UBA) is preparing for a major leadership transition as seasoned banker Emmanuel Nnorom takes over as chairman from Tony Elumelu on August 21, 2026.

The appointment marks the beginning of a new era for one of Africa's largest financial institutions following Elumelu's retirement after completing the maximum tenure allowed for non-executive directors under the Central Bank of Nigeria's corporate governance guidelines.

Nnorom brings decades of banking and corporate leadership experience to the role. With a professional career spanning more than 40 years, he has built a reputation as an accomplished executive with expertise in banking operations, finance, corporate governance and strategic management.

Before joining UBA's board as a non-executive director in 2024, Nnorom held several key executive positions within the bank.

During his time in management, he served as Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director overseeing finance, risk management and the Group Executive Office before rising to become Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.

In that capacity, he supervised the bank's operations across numerous African countries, helping to expand UBA's footprint and strengthen its position as one of the continent's leading financial services providers.

His familiarity with the institution and extensive leadership experience are viewed as major strengths as he prepares to assume the chairmanship.

Outside UBA, Nnorom has also played significant roles in some of Nigeria's biggest companies. Since 2017, he has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, overseeing investments across sectors including power, healthcare, hospitality, technology, financial services and energy.

Earlier in his career, he led Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp) as President and Chief Executive Officer, while also occupying senior management positions at Standard Trust Bank, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Nnorom has also attended executive leadership programmes at the University of Oxford.

Following his appointment, Nnorom expressed gratitude to the UBA board for its confidence in him and pledged to build on the bank's achievements.

He said he looks forward to working closely with the board, management and employees to sustain the institution's growth while creating long-term value for customers, shareholders and other stakeholders.

As he prepares to take office, Nnorom inherits responsibility for guiding a banking group that operates in 20 African countries and four international financial centres, serving more than 50 million customers worldwide. His leadership will be closely watched as UBA enters its next phase of expansion and innovation.
