Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has come to the defence of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, following criticism over her recent advice to unemployed women to consider small-scale businesses.

The controversial artiste said many Nigerians misinterpreted the message behind the First Lady’s remarks, arguing that engaging in businesses such as selling roasted corn or preparing akara should not be viewed as a sign of failure or poverty.

Speaking during a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Portable explained that there is dignity in honest labour and that starting with a small business can serve as a foundation for financial growth.

Portable Says Small Businesses Deserve Respect

The singer stated that many successful Nigerians today were raised by parents who depended on petty trading and small businesses to provide for their families.

According to him, activities such as selling food items, trading goods or running roadside businesses have helped many families survive and support the education of their children.

Portable argued that society should stop attaching shame to certain forms of legitimate work, noting that financial success often begins with taking available opportunities.

He said the important thing is not necessarily the size of a business but the commitment and determination behind it.

Singer Challenges Negative Perception

The First Lady’s comments generated debate after she encouraged unemployed women to explore income-generating activities, including making and selling akara and roasted corn.

While some Nigerians criticised the suggestion, describing it as insensitive amid economic challenges, others viewed it as a call for entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

Portable joined those defending the advice, saying the focus should be on encouraging people to create opportunities rather than waiting endlessly for formal employment.

He explained that many people who now enjoy financial success started from humble beginnings and should not look down on small ventures.

Portable Shares Experience From London

The singer also used his personal experience abroad to support his argument, saying he once saw a person selling roasted corn in London while driving an expensive vehicle.

According to him, the situation showed that small businesses are not necessarily connected to hardship, as people in different parts of the world engage in various trades regardless of their financial status.

Portable said Nigerians should understand that entrepreneurship comes in different forms and that success depends on how people manage and grow their businesses.

He maintained that selling corn or other items should not automatically be interpreted as a lack of ambition.

Encouraging Self-Reliance

Portable stressed that unemployment can be reduced when individuals are willing to explore different ways of making a living.

He noted that waiting for a perfect job opportunity could prevent some people from taking steps that could eventually improve their financial situation.

The singer encouraged Nigerians to value every honest means of earning money, regardless of public perception.

He added that many families have benefited from small businesses started by parents who sacrificed to create better opportunities for their children.

Portable’s Continued Public Commentary

The singer, known for his outspoken personality and frequent public statements on social issues, has often shared his views on matters beyond music.

His latest comments have added to ongoing discussions about entrepreneurship, unemployment and the importance of encouraging Nigerians to embrace different economic opportunities.

Portable concluded that the message behind the First Lady’s remarks was about empowerment rather than promoting hardship.

He insisted that there is honour in legitimate work and that selling products such as corn, food or other goods can become a pathway to financial independence when approached with dedication and proper planning.
