Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about one of the greatest fears that continues to occupy his mind despite enjoying years of remarkable success in the music industry.

The award-winning singer revealed that his biggest concern is not knowing the right time to step away from music, explaining that he worries about remaining in the spotlight longer than necessary and risking the legacy he has worked hard to build.

Davido made the revelation during a recent video broadcast, where he reflected on fame, success and the emotional challenges that many public figures experience after their careers begin to decline.

According to the singer, one of the saddest realities he has observed is watching people who were once widely admired gradually lose relevance and struggle to adjust to life outside public attention.

Fame Can Be Difficult To Lose

Speaking candidly about the pressures of celebrity life, Davido said he would like to create a therapy centre dedicated to helping entertainers and other public figures cope with life after fame.

He explained that many successful individuals experience emotional and psychological difficulties when they are no longer receiving the same level of public recognition they once enjoyed.

For Davido, this transition is often overlooked despite the enormous impact it can have on a person’s wellbeing.

“If there is one thing I could build, I would build a therapy centre for people who were popular and very successful people,” he said.

“Because it is crazy to be on top of the world and the next moment you are not.”

The singer suggested that losing fame can be just as difficult as achieving it, especially for individuals whose identities have been closely tied to public admiration for many years.

Success Does Not End Public Criticism

Davido also used football to illustrate how even the most accomplished individuals continue to face criticism regardless of their achievements.

According to him, public opinion often overlooks years of hard work and instead focuses on recent disappointments.

He pointed to Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo as an example, noting that despite winning some of football’s biggest honours, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star still became the subject of criticism following Portugal’s exit from the FIFA World Cup.

“Even in soccer, you win World Cup, Champions League and other trophies and people still don’t think it is enough,” Davido said.

“For instance, look at my good friend Ronaldo – after everything he’s done for football, they still laughed at him for exiting the World Cup.”

His comments highlight the intense expectations placed on globally recognised figures, where success is often taken for granted and mistakes receive greater attention than achievements.

Protecting A Hard-Earned Legacy

Davido admitted that after spending years building one of Africa’s biggest music careers, his greatest fear is making decisions that could negatively affect everything he has accomplished.

Rather than worrying about popularity or commercial success alone, he said he constantly prays for wisdom to recognise when it is time to move on from active music.

“That is my greatest fear,” he stated.

“I have worked so hard for me to come and spoil it with something. I pray to God every day to show me the right time to pack it up.”

His remarks reflect a growing awareness among entertainers about the importance of preserving their reputation and leaving the stage on their own terms.

One Of Afrobeats’ Biggest Stars

Davido remains one of Nigeria’s most successful music exports, with multiple hit songs, international collaborations and sold-out concerts across Africa, Europe and North America.

Since breaking into the industry over a decade ago, he has established himself as one of the leading figures responsible for taking Afrobeats to a global audience.

Beyond music, the singer has expanded into business, philanthropy and entertainment ventures while continuing to mentor emerging talents within the Nigerian music industry.

Although there is no indication that retirement is imminent, Davido’s comments reveal that he is already thinking beyond chart success and record sales.

For him, preserving a legacy built through years of dedication appears just as important as creating new music, demonstrating that even at the height of success, the future remains a subject of careful reflection.
