Afrobeats star Rema has once again placed Nigerian music on the global stage after delivering a captivating performance at the United States opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup held at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
The singer thrilled thousands of fans with an energetic rendition of his track “Goals”, which features on the official World Cup soundtrack. His performance formed part of a high-profile lineup celebrating the start of the tournament in one of the host nations.
Rema appeared on stage in a striking all-white hooded outfit, commanding attention as he performed alongside a large group of dancers. The stage design featured a massive illuminated World Cup trophy installation, adding a dramatic visual backdrop to the ceremony.
The event also showcased a multicultural lineup of global music stars. Brazilian singer Anitta and South Korean pop star Lisa joined Rema for a coordinated performance segment, reflecting the international spirit of the tournament. His appearance drew attention after he wore a symbolic jacket adorned with 46 green lapels, each bearing the names of 39 abducted pupils and seven teachers from Oyo State. The back of the jacket carried the message “Bring Them Home,” drawing emotional reactions from viewers and fans online.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially commenced on June 11, with 48 national teams competing in what is expected to be the largest edition of the tournament in history. The expanded format and multi-nation hosting arrangement have made it one of the most widely celebrated global sporting events to date.
