The Nollywood box office for the first half of 2026 has recorded one of its most competitive performances in recent years, with the top seven films collectively generating over ₦1.66 billion.
The figures highlight a clear shift in audience preference, with romance-driven narratives and franchise sequels dominating cinema earnings across Nigeria and select international markets.
Leading the chart is Call of My Life, a romance-comedy directed by Dammy Twitch in his feature film debut. The film grossed an impressive ₦498.40 million, making it the highest-earning Nollywood title of the period.
Its consistent four-week run at the top of the box office underscores its strong audience appeal, particularly among younger cinema-goers.
The success has also placed it among the top 10 highest-grossing Nollywood films of all time, marking a major milestone for both the cast and production team.
In second place is Love and New Notes, led by Timini Egbuson, which earned ₦400.17 million. The film’s strong emotional storytelling and modern romantic themes helped it maintain steady traction at cinemas, proving once again that romance remains a dominant force in Nollywood’s commercial success.
Coming in third is The Return of Arinzo, an action-drama directed by Iyabo Ojo in her directorial debut. The film grossed ₦347.80 million and stands out for blending emotional depth with high-intensity action sequences.
Its performance reflects a growing audience appetite for well-produced action narratives within the Nigerian film industry.
Further down the list, Onobiren (A Woman’s Story) earned ₦138.20 million, while the historical epic Efunroye: The Unicorn followed closely with ₦103.80 million. Both films highlight Nollywood’s continued investment in storytelling that explores cultural identity and historical themes.
Mother’s Love also performed steadily, bringing in ₦103.00 million, reinforcing the consistent appeal of family-centered drama in the market.
Meanwhile, the horror-thriller Alive Till Dawn closed the top seven with ₦74.00 million, showing that genre diversification continues to find space despite romance and drama dominating earnings.
One of the clearest trends from the half-year data is the dominance of romance films, which continue to outperform other genres both in audience engagement and repeat viewership.
Call of My Life not only led the chart but also set a benchmark for theatrical success in 2026, proving the commercial strength of emotionally driven storytelling.
Another major highlight is the rise of first-time directors making significant box office impact. Dammy Twitch’s transition from music video production to feature filmmaking has been described as one of the standout success stories of the year.
Similarly, Iyabo Ojo’s directorial debut with The Return of Arinzo signals a growing trend of established entertainers expanding into behind-the-camera roles with strong commercial results.
Industry analysts also point to the ₦100 million mark as a key performance threshold. Films crossing this line are increasingly viewed as certified box office hits, and this year’s data shows a clear gap between the top three films and the rest of the list, indicating a highly competitive but top-heavy market.
Overall, the first half of 2026 reflects a Nollywood industry that is expanding in scale, refining its storytelling strategies, and increasingly rewarding both innovation and star power at the box office.
