The widow of late Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has spoken publicly about the difficult reality facing her family since his passing, revealing that financial hardship has disrupted their daily life and affected the children’s education.
She shared the emotional details during a conversation with content creator King Mitchy in a video released on Wednesday, where she appealed to Nigerians for support.
Speaking about their current situation, the widow explained that maintaining basic living conditions has become increasingly difficult following the actor’s death.
According to her, unpaid expenses have resulted in the family living without electricity for nearly two months, while other household needs continue to pile up.
She said the lack of electricity has forced the family to adopt difficult routines, including searching for places outside their home to charge mobile phones.
Water supply has also become a challenge.
“We fetch water from the well. Because I have not paid the house rent. And they have even cut my lights for two months now. No lights since. We have been like that. Every night we go to look for a place to charge our phones. And… It’s not easy,” she said.
The widow’s remarks highlighted the practical struggles the family now faces as they attempt to adjust to life after losing one of Nollywood’s most recognised comic figures.
Beyond household expenses, she revealed that the children’s education has become one of their biggest concerns.
According to her, unpaid school fees have interrupted their ability to continue attending classes.
She disclosed that communication from the school had confirmed the situation and suggested that immediate financial assistance would be needed to allow the children return to their studies.
“Right now, they can’t go to school again. I can even show you the message the school sent me today,” she said.
One of the late actor’s daughters also appeared in the video and spoke about her mother’s efforts to keep the family going despite the difficulties.
Expressing gratitude, she described her mother as someone who continues to make sacrifices to provide food, support their education and maintain a sense of normalcy at home.
“I want to thank God for my mom. She tries everything she can to feed us, to pay our school fees, to make us happy,” she said.
King Mitchy, who shared the video online, explained that the intention was to draw attention to the family’s current circumstances and encourage support from members of the public.
According to the content creator, assistance is being sought to help the family settle outstanding school fees, clear rent obligations and restore electricity to the home.
John Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu, built a successful career in Nollywood and became one of Nigeria’s most beloved comic actors through his memorable performances in movies that entertained audiences across generations.
His unique style of comedy earned him widespread recognition both within and outside Nigeria.
Mr Ibu passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62.
More than two years after his passing, the latest appeal has drawn attention to the challenges his immediate family says they continue to face while trying to move forward.
The family hopes public support can provide relief and help stabilise their living conditions in the coming months.
