The AI Film Festival founded by Obinna Okerekeocha is set to return in 2026, with organisers confirming that the event will take place in September at Alliance Française, Lagos, as interest in artificial intelligence continues to reshape global filmmaking.

The festival, which debuted last year, quickly established itself as one of the most forward-thinking creative platforms in Africa.

It brought together filmmakers, tech innovators, visual artists, and digital creators who are all exploring how artificial intelligence is transforming storytelling, production processes, and audience engagement in the film industry.

In its first edition, the event recorded over 400 film submissions from creators across different countries. The strong turnout highlighted a growing curiosity around AI-driven filmmaking and the possibilities it offers to both emerging and established storytellers.

The festival also featured curated film screenings, interactive panel sessions, and workshops aimed at equipping creatives with practical knowledge on how to integrate AI tools into production workflows.

A major highlight of the inaugural edition was the launch of the AI Academy, a training initiative designed to help filmmakers and content creators better understand AI technologies and apply them in real production environments.

The academy was widely praised for making complex digital tools more accessible to young African creatives.

Speaking on the upcoming edition, organisers said the 2026 festival will expand its scope and deepen conversations around innovation and responsibility in AI-powered storytelling.

According to them, this year’s edition will focus more on experimentation, collaboration, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in creative production.

Chidera “Odera Collins” Okonji, who serves as the director of communications and also hosts panel discussions at the festival, described the initiative as a major shift in how storytelling is approached in modern cinema.

He noted that the festival continues to challenge traditional methods while encouraging creators to explore new artistic possibilities enabled by technology.

Okonji added that the 2026 edition will feature a wider range of activities, including AI-generated film screenings, industry discussions, hands-on training sessions, and networking opportunities designed to connect creatives with technology experts and industry stakeholders.

Organisers also announced that submissions for the 2026 edition officially opened on May 1 and will remain open until July 31, giving filmmakers and digital artists ample time to submit their AI-driven projects for consideration.

As anticipation builds for the September event, the AI Film Festival continues to position itself as a key platform driving conversations around the future of cinema in Africa, particularly at the intersection of creativity and emerging technologies.
