Veteran Yoruba actor and theatre icon, Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80, marking the end of a long and influential era in Nigerian stage and film history.

His death was announced on Friday by fellow actor Kunle Afod, who shared the news on social media, describing the late thespian as a respected figure whose contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry would remain unforgettable.

The announcement quickly drew reactions from colleagues, fans, and cultural commentators who have followed Oyewo’s decades-long career.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Kola Oyewo developed an interest in acting early in life.

He officially began his professional journey in 1964 when he joined the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, one of the key platforms that helped shape modern Yoruba theatre.

From those early days on stage, he steadily built a reputation as a disciplined performer with a strong command of traditional storytelling and stage interpretation.

Over the years, Oyewo became one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba theatre and later transitioned into film and television, where he continued to display his versatility.

He was especially celebrated for his powerful stage presence and his ability to bring depth and emotion to complex roles. His work helped bridge the gap between traditional stage productions and contemporary Nigerian cinema at a time when the industry was still evolving.

One of his most memorable performances came in The Gods Are Not to Blame, the acclaimed adaptation of Ola Rotimi’s reinterpretation of the classical Oedipus story.

Oyewo’s portrayal of Odewale earned him wide recognition across Africa’s theatre community, further establishing him as a respected figure in dramatic arts.

His performance in the play is still referenced today as one of the defining interpretations in Yoruba-language theatre.

Beyond his performances, Oyewo also contributed to the growth of theatre education and mentorship. He spent years guiding younger actors, many of whom have gone on to become established names in Nollywood.

His influence extended beyond the stage, shaping acting techniques, performance discipline, and storytelling traditions within the industry.

Tributes continue to pour in from colleagues who describe him as a humble, dedicated, and highly knowledgeable performer.

Many have noted that his passing is not just a loss to his family but to the entire Nigerian creative industry, especially the Yoruba theatre community where he played a foundational role.

As the news of his death spreads, fans across Nigeria and beyond have been reflecting on his legacy, revisiting some of his most iconic performances and celebrating a career that spanned more than five decades.

Though he is gone, his contributions to Nigerian theatre and film remain deeply embedded in the country’s cultural history.
