Nollywood actress Omoshalewa Yusuf, popularly known as Basira Beere, has emotionally opened up about the traumatic experiences she endured in her former marriage, revealing that repeated domestic violence led to the loss of multiple pregnancies.

The actress made the painful disclosure during an appearance on the Talk To B podcast, where she recounted years of physical abuse, emotional trauma, and heartbreak that eventually forced her to walk away from the marriage for the sake of her survival.

Speaking candidly during the interview, Basira explained that she entered the marriage with genuine love and commitment, despite warnings from friends who questioned her decision to marry a man they believed was not on the same social or financial level as her.

According to her, she ignored those concerns because she believed that success and social status could change with time and that love mattered more than public opinion.

“When I wanted to get married to him, my friends complained that I was marrying someone of a lower calibre than me,” she recalled.

“I was like, he was not, that I just received the grace of God, and I also came from nothing. When we wanted to do our wedding, I paid for about 70% of the ceremony. I thought I was supporting my man.”

However, she revealed that the marriage began to deteriorate almost immediately after the wedding ceremony over what she described as a harmless exchange with another man who congratulated her after the wedding.

“His problem started about two to three days after the wedding,” she said.

“Days after the wedding, a guy texted me to congratulate me on the wedding, and I called him dear, and that was when the problem started. It was so tough, he beat me so much that even our landlord tried to intervene.”

Basira disclosed that despite the violence, she remained in the marriage for years because she was repeatedly encouraged by her parents to endure the situation rather than speak publicly about her problems.

According to her, her family believed marital issues should be handled privately, making it difficult for her to seek help.

“My parents hated it when you complained about your marriage to them. If I explain to them what happened, they would say that I should be patient and endure,” she explained.

“Only my siblings who stayed with me at the time could attest to what I went through.”

The actress further stated that arguments in the home could escalate over very minor issues, sometimes resulting in severe physical attacks.

She recalled one shocking incident where a disagreement over music by Fuji stars Pasuma and Saheed Osupa reportedly turned violent.

“At a point, I was like, if this continues, we will kill ourselves someday,” she said.

“I lost about three or four pregnancies due to his beating me. We have fought because of a Pasuma track before because he likes listening to him.”

Basira recounted another painful episode where her husband allegedly destroyed her phone during an argument before assaulting her physically, an incident she said eventually caused another miscarriage.

“He angrily broke my phone, and when I challenged him, he beat daylight out of me,” she revealed.

“Within three hours, my tummy started aching, and then I saw blood; it was then that I concluded that I could no longer stay.”

The actress said the repeated violence left her emotionally broken and constantly fearful for her safety. She added that she eventually realised remaining in the marriage could cost her life.

According to her, deciding to leave was not easy, but she believes it ultimately saved her from a worse fate.

“We did not have any children together, and I thank God that I left because if I had waited a bit longer, something else would have happened,” she said.

Basira’s emotional revelations have since sparked conversations online about domestic violence, toxic marriages, and the pressure many women face to remain in abusive relationships in the name of endurance and societal expectations.

Many social media users have praised the actress for speaking openly about her experience, with some describing her story as a reminder of the dangers of silence in abusive homes.

Her interview has also reignited discussions around the importance of support systems, mental health awareness, and the need for victims of domestic violence to seek help before situations become fatal.
