Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to reconsider their support for President Bola Tinubu in future elections, citing the country’s ongoing electricity challenges and what he described as unfulfilled campaign promises.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi referenced a statement allegedly made by Tinubu during the 2023 campaign, where the president linked his re-election prospects to improvements in the power sector.
“If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term,” Obi quoted Tinubu as saying.
Obi argued that the current state of Nigeria’s electricity supply does not reflect any significant improvement since Tinubu assumed office in 2023. According to him, power generation has reportedly fallen below 4,000 megawatts, despite the government increasing electricity tariffs for consumers.
He described the situation as evidence of a growing disconnect between leadership promises and the realities faced by citizens, adding that many Nigerians continue to struggle with frequent and prolonged power outages.
Obi also pointed to global and continental comparisons, noting that Nigeria’s electricity consumption per capita remains extremely low. He stated that Nigeria records about 144 kilowatt-hours per capita, significantly below the African average of 617 kilowatt-hours.
“When he took office in 2023, Nigeria had a power supply of over 4,000 megawatts and lower tariffs. Today, the electricity power supply is less than 4,000 megawatts on average, and Nigerians are paying higher tariffs,” Obi said.
He further emphasized that the country’s low electricity consumption highlights broader structural issues within the power sector, calling it one of the lowest in the world.
Reference To Airport Incident
In his criticism, Obi also referenced a reported incident at Jos airport on April 2, 2026, during what he described as a condolence visit by the president.
According to Obi, Tinubu reportedly complained about the absence of electricity at the airport and indicated he would not remain longer due to the situation.
“You have no light here — I fly out in ten minutes,” Obi quoted the president as saying.
Obi used the example to highlight what he sees as a contradiction in leadership, pointing out that while citizens endure extended periods without electricity, top officials are unwilling to tolerate even brief power interruptions.
“At a time when Nigerians are enduring days without power, our leaders cannot even stay a few minutes without it,” he added.
Call For Stronger Accountability
The former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to use their voting power to demand accountability from political leaders, stressing the need for competence and empathy in governance.
According to him, the country’s persistent electricity crisis reflects deeper governance issues that require urgent attention.
“Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders — those lacking the capacity and compassion — who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises,” Obi stated.
His remarks have continued to generate discussions across political and public spaces, with supporters and critics offering differing views on his comments and the current state of the nation’s power sector.
