Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai has issued a public apology following an earlier outburst over her exclusion from the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2026 nominations.
The actress’s initial reaction drew attention across social media, as she openly criticized the award body and shared her disappointment over not receiving a nomination. At the time, Afegbai wrote:
“I always choose to believe everything happens for a reason. I don’t need a nomination for validation. The truth is clear nobody trended like IDIA from To Kill A Monkey last year. Her acting was 100 100. You guys can eat your award.”
The post triggered mixed responses. While some fans supported her view, others noted that award selections are highly competitive and that omissions do not necessarily reflect an artist’s talent or impact.
In the days following the controversy, Afegbai issued a detailed apology to address the situation. She acknowledged that her reaction was inappropriate and apologized to the AMVCA, the nominees, her cast and crew from To Kill A Monkey, and her fans. She stated:
“This apology should have come earlier. That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill A Monkey family, and all of you who have supported me.”
Afegbai explained that her reaction was fueled by a combination of disappointment and personal feelings of being overlooked in her career. She said:
“Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded. I’ve come a long way in my journey, and for a long time I felt invisible. To Kill A Monkey felt like my ‘now they see me’ moment, and I held on to that very tightly. When I wasn’t nominated, I reacted from a place of hurt, entitlement and it was out of character for me. I was wrong and I am sorry.”
In closing, Afegbai asked for understanding and pledged to approach her future actions with greater care. She wrote:
“Please give me a chance to be better. I no go fall una hand again. Love, Forever your Lilly.”
Her apology comes after widespread discussion online about her initial comments, providing clarity about her intentions and reflecting her perspective on the incident. Fans and industry observers have since responded, some welcoming the apology and others calling for more focus on artistic achievements beyond awards.
The AMVCA remains one of Africa’s premier platforms for film and television recognition, with nominations often sparking debate over fairness and transparency. Afegbai’s apology adds another chapter to the ongoing conversation about public reactions, personal expectations, and the pressures of the entertainment industry.
