Nigerian singer Omah Lay has shared his perspective on the state of the Afrobeats industry, describing it as deeply divided along fan loyalties, particularly between supporters of Davido and Wizkid.

In a recent interview with The Fader, the “Soso” hitmaker explained that the industry often feels split into factions, with artists and fans aligning themselves with either of the two major camps.

He noted that this division plays a significant role in how artistes are perceived and supported within the Afrobeats space.

“The whole Nigerian Afrobeats scene is very separated. It’s like if you’re with Davido, you’re on one side; if you’re with Wizkid, you’re on the other,” he said.

Omah Lay also revealed that in 2024, he took a step back from the top figures in the industry by unfollowing Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy on social media. He explained that his decision was influenced by a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the direction of Afrobeats at the time.

“Back in 2024, I actually unfollowed Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido. I felt like they started something with Afrobeats that we needed, but it was an old pattern,” he stated.

Despite this, Omah Lay acknowledged that the biggest names in the industry played a major role in shaping the global success of Afrobeats, even if he believes the genre needs to evolve beyond its current structure.

He also spoke about his relationship with Davido, revealing that their collaboration on the track “With You” came together naturally without complications. According to him, working with the award-winning artiste helped him better understand Davido’s personality and approach to music.

Omah Lay described Davido as someone who faces criticism due to his background, suggesting that public perception often overshadows the singer’s work ethic and dedication to his craft.

He went further to praise Davido’s consistency, noting that the singer continues to push forward despite the pressure and expectations placed on him.

According to Omah Lay, Davido stands out because he has reached a level where he no longer needs to prove himself to anyone, yet he still maintains a strong drive to remain relevant and successful in the music industry.

The singer’s comments have since sparked discussions among fans, many of whom continue to debate the influence of loyalty, rivalry, and competition within the Afrobeats scene.

His remarks also highlight the evolving dynamics within Nigerian music, where newer artists are beginning to express their views on the structure and direction of the industry.

As Afrobeats continues to gain global recognition, conversations like this reflect the growing complexity of the genre and the personalities that shape it.
