Nigerian filmmaker Benneth Nwankwo has sparked conversation in the entertainment space after praising Funke Akindele for her extraordinary influence, following reports that her latest film Behind The Scenes overwhelmed a major streaming platform.
According to Nwankwo, the actress’s impact goes far beyond typical celebrity status, describing her as “an entire industry” due to her ability to command massive audience attention both in cinemas and online.
Streaming Surge Forces Platform To Its Limits
The buzz began after Behind The Scenes, which had already enjoyed a hugely successful cinema run, debuted on the Kava streaming platform. Shortly after its release, the platform reportedly experienced a server crash due to an unprecedented surge in traffic.
Nwankwo explained that the issue was not a minor technical glitch but a full system overload caused by the sheer number of viewers attempting to stream the film at the same time.
He noted that the platform itself acknowledged the situation, releasing a statement confirming a “record-breaking surge in traffic” and admitting that the unexpected demand placed intense pressure on its servers.
“They also admitted the traffic is putting pressure on their servers and causing loading issues for users,” he explained, highlighting how rare such an occurrence is for a streaming service.
Understanding The Server Crash Phenomenon
To simplify the situation, Nwankwo described how streaming platforms function behind the scenes. According to him, a server acts as the engine that delivers content to viewers whenever they press play on a film.
Every click sends a request to the system, essentially asking it to stream the content instantly. However, when millions of users attempt to access the same film simultaneously, the system can become overwhelmed.
“Now imagine millions of people pressing play at the same time because of one film. One film. One woman’s name on the poster,” he said.
As the number of requests increases beyond the system’s capacity, performance begins to drop. Videos start buffering, pages load slowly, and eventually, parts of the platform may stop responding entirely.
“That is what people call a server crash. It is not that the platform is weak, it is that the demand is suddenly too high,” he added.
From Box Office Success To Streaming Dominance
Behind The Scenes had already proven its strength before arriving on streaming platforms. The film reportedly grossed over ₦2.7 billion at the box office, making it one of the most successful Nollywood releases in recent times.
With its transition to streaming, the audience base expanded even further. According to Nwankwo, those who had seen the film in cinemas returned to watch it again online, while new viewers joined in due to the growing buzz.
The situation was amplified by the film’s availability across multiple platforms, including Netflix in Nigeria and Kava for a wider global audience.
“With Netflix showing it in Nigeria and Kava pushing it worldwide, the traffic becomes massive at once. Two platforms. Two massive audiences. Same film,” he explained.
“You Are Not Just A Filmmaker, You Are An Industry”
For Nwankwo, the incident is a clear reflection of Akindele’s unmatched influence in Nollywood. He emphasized that reaching a point where a single release can disrupt a streaming platform is no ordinary achievement.
“When your name alone has the power to break the internet and stop a streaming service from working, you have reached a level of success that is almost unimaginable,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming his stance that Akindele’s impact places her in a league of her own, not just as a filmmaker but as a dominant force shaping the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The development has since sparked widespread reactions, with many fans and industry observers agreeing that the actress continues to redefine success in Nollywood.
