As the countdown to the 12th AMVCA ceremony on 9 May 2026 continues, attention has shifted to some of Nollywood’s most talked-about films of the year.

This weekend offers viewers a chance to catch up on several award-nominated titles currently streaming across major platforms like Netflix and Kava TV.

Among the standout productions is The Herd, a tense survival thriller that has earned multiple nominations, including Best Movie and Best Director.

The film begins on what is meant to be a joyful wedding day but quickly descends into chaos when the main characters are abducted by armed men disguised as herders.

What follows is a gripping story of fear, endurance, and emotional survival. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Daniel Etim Effiong, Genoveva Umeh, Kunle Remi, and Mercy Aigbe, and has been praised for its emotional depth and realism.

Also drawing major attention is To Kill A Monkey, an eight-part drama created by filmmaker Kemi Adetiba.

The series explores the moral decline of a struggling programmer who becomes involved in cybercrime after reconnecting with a former friend.

The storyline carefully balances ambition, desperation, and consequence, making it one of the most discussed Nollywood series in recent times.

Its cast includes William Benson, Bucci Franklin, Bimbo Akintola, and Chidi Mokeme, all delivering layered performances that drive the narrative forward.

Another major title in the AMVCA conversation is Behind The Scenes, a box office success that also dominated cinema charts in 2025.

Directed by Funke Akindele, the film follows the life of a successful businesswoman whose relationships and generosity begin to unravel under the weight of betrayal and hidden resentment.

With appearances from Funke Akindele, Scarlet Gomez, Tobi Bakre, and Iyabo Ojo, the film blends drama with emotional tension, reflecting the complexities of friendship and trust.

On the political drama side, Her Excellency offers a powerful narrative centred on a First Lady whose carefully constructed public image begins to collapse following a murder investigation.

The film brings together an impressive cast including Sola Sobowale, Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, and Bimbo Ademoye, delivering a story filled with suspense, power struggles, and hidden truths within political spaces.

Completing the lineup is Red Circle, a fast-rising crime thriller that follows an investigative journalist uncovering a dangerous criminal network in Lagos.

The film has been widely recognised for its storytelling strength and marked a milestone for its young producer, becoming one of the fastest Nollywood films to reach major box office success. Featuring actors like Folu Storms, Timini Egbuson, and Femi Branch, it highlights the growing ambition in Nigerian filmmaking.

Together, these films represent the diversity and creative growth of Nollywood, offering viewers a mix of action, drama, crime, and political storytelling as the AMVCA season approaches.
