There was deep sorrow and emotional scenes in Lagos on Friday as family, friends, and colleagues gathered to bid farewell to popular Nigerian comic actor, Bamidele Oluwatope, professionally known as Okemesi.

The beloved entertainer was laid to rest at the Ayobami Cemetery in Lagos, days after he passed away on February 24, 2026, following a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness. His burial ceremony was marked by intense grief, heartfelt tributes, and an overwhelming sense of loss within the Nollywood community.

Videos from the solemn event, which have since gone viral on social media, captured the painful atmosphere at the graveside. In one particularly emotional clip, a woman believed to be the late actor’s sister was seen crying uncontrollably as she questioned those around her, demanding to know who might be responsible for her brother’s untimely death. Her anguished cries reflected the deep pain and shock felt by the bereaved family.

Okemesi was widely admired for his natural comic talent, distinctive delivery, and humorous use of the Ekiti dialect in Yoruba-language films. His performances endeared him to fans across Nigeria, earning him a loyal following and respect among his peers in the entertainment industry. Known for his ability to effortlessly bring laughter to audiences, his death has left a void that many say will be difficult to fill.

Before his passing, the late actor had opened up about the personal struggles he was facing. In an interview on his colleague Jeff Owolewa’s podcast, Okemesi revealed that he had fallen on hard times, becoming homeless and grappling with severe health challenges. He spoke candidly about what he described as a spiritual attack that temporarily left him unable to walk, further complicating his situation and worsening his living conditions.

Confirming the tragic news, Jeff Owolewa disclosed that Okemesi slipped into a coma a few hours before his death. According to him, the comedian had suffered a relapse after initial treatment and was rushed back to the hospital. Unfortunately, securing immediate medical attention proved difficult, as several hospitals reportedly lacked space to admit him.

Eventually, he was taken to a private medical facility in Lagos, where doctors placed him on oxygen support in an attempt to stabilise his condition. Despite the efforts of the medical team and the fervent prayers of colleagues, friends, and fans, Okemesi never regained consciousness.

News of his passing sent shockwaves through Nollywood and social media, with many entertainers and admirers paying tribute to his talent, resilience, and contributions to the industry. Several actors described him as humble, hardworking, and passionate about his craft, noting that he remained dedicated to entertaining audiences even in the face of personal hardship.

His death has also reignited conversations about the welfare of actors in the Nigerian film industry, particularly regarding access to healthcare, financial security, and support systems during difficult times. Many have called for stronger structures to protect and care for entertainers, especially those who have devoted years to building the industry.

As Okemesi is finally laid to rest, his legacy lives on through the countless films and skits that brought joy to many households. Though gone too soon, his humour, creativity, and unforgettable performances will continue to resonate with fans who cherished his work.
