Social media users have showered praise on veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde following the surprise appearance of former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo at the premiere of her latest film, A Mother’s Love.
The highly anticipated movie was unveiled on Sunday, March 1, ahead of its nationwide cinema release scheduled for March 6. The glamorous premiere attracted several high-profile personalities, but Obasanjo’s presence stood out, instantly becoming one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
In a viral video from the event, the former two-term president was seen arriving in grand style, flanked by security operatives. Another clip captured Omotola posing with Obasanjo alongside her family on the red carpet, a moment that quickly sparked admiration and excitement among fans and social media users.
Reacting to the development, many Nigerians took to social platforms to applaud the actress, describing the moment as a clear display of influence, connection, and respect.
One Shay Not Seyi wrote, “These things get levels.”
One Iyanu commented, “Okay, nah him go help am sell am. Say nah levels.”
One Helen Nora added, “Levels dey.”
One Heyloisss wrote, “No be small thing o.”
One Maryham000 remarked, “Wow, see connections.”
One Uche simply wrote, “Doings.”
One Marcopolo commented, “Jalade get doings oo.”
One Temitope Augustine added, “She is doing everything to reach those billions without dancing.”
One Mr Ebony wrote, “Omotola still get doings oh.”
The overwhelming reaction highlights the admiration many still have for Omotola, who remains one of Nollywood’s most respected figures decades into her career.
No Dancing, Just Strategy
The excitement surrounding the premiere comes shortly after Omotola sparked conversation online by declaring that she would not resort to dancing on social media to promote her movies. According to her, such tactics are unnecessary for a well-made production.
She described the trend of dancing to advertise films as unprofessional, stating that quality storytelling, strong performances, and strategic promotion should be enough to attract audiences.
Her comments followed remarks made by her colleague, Kunle Afolayan, who had earlier stated during his own movie premiere that box office figures alone do not excite him. He noted that earning ₦1 billion or ₦2 billion in cinemas holds little appeal if personal profit remains low, adding that he prefers to see tangible returns rather than just impressive numbers. He also subtly criticised the culture of dancing to market movies.
His comments, however, triggered a wave of reactions within the industry.
Industry Debate And Celebrity Reactions
Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele was quick to respond, clarifying that she was not responsible for anyone’s career struggles. She urged Afolayan not to allow jealousy affect his perspective, noting that the creative space is vast enough for everyone to thrive.
Funke later shared a video of herself dancing while promoting her highest-grossing film, seemingly reaffirming her stance that any strategy that drives visibility and sales is valid.
Joining the conversation, Iyabo Ojo offered her own take, saying “jealousy is the last class to attend before becoming a witch.” She questioned who created the rules around film promotion and encouraged actors to embrace whatever method works best for them, while allowing others to succeed in their own way. She added that “2026 isn’t for talkers, but for doers.”
Veteran actress Chinyere Wilfred also joined the discussion, subtly throwing shade as she posted a dancing video while urging colleagues not to shy away from creative promotional methods.
Omotola’s Longstanding Industry Advocacy
Beyond the current promotional debate, Omotola has consistently spoken about the need for better structure and long-term sustainability in Nollywood. Last year, she openly compared Nigeria’s film industry to Hollywood, stressing the importance of systems that reward actors beyond initial project fees.
The legendary actress revealed that during her four-year stint working in Hollywood, she received monthly residual payments from her projects — a practice largely absent in Nollywood despite her three decades of contribution.
Her comments reignited discussions about royalties, residual earnings, and the need for stronger institutional frameworks to protect and reward Nigerian creatives.
A Premiere That Made A Statement
With the presence of Olusegun Obasanjo at her premiere, Omotola once again demonstrated her enduring influence and status in the entertainment industry. For many fans, the moment symbolised respect, legacy, and strategic positioning — proof that star power goes beyond social media trends.
As A Mother’s Love prepares for its cinema debut, expectations remain high, with many eager to see whether the film will translate its powerful premiere moment into box office success.
