Nigerian singer and songwriter Crayon has sparked controversy after launching a public attack on his former label boss Don Jazzy and Mavin Records in a series of social media posts that were later deleted.
The artiste, whose real name is Charles Chibueze Chukwu, was signed to Mavin Records in 2019 and gained recognition under the label with several hit songs. However, his recent comments online suggest that his relationship with the music company may have broken down.
In the now-deleted posts, Crayon made a number of allegations against the label and its management, claiming he had not received royalties owed to him despite the success of projects released during his time with the company.
He also made emotional remarks about the personal impact the situation had on him and his family, even going as far as blaming the label for the death of his mother.
In one of the tweets, the singer wrote:
“Una collected 200 million dollars, no give me shishi!!
Una wan use delay payment kill me.
My eye red!!
My mama died because of una!!
Heads go roll!”
He also referred to Don Jazzy in the posts while expressing anger toward members of the label’s management team.
“Don Jazzy na my boy!! Una dey mad!
God go punish all una mama and una papa me.
Tega highest criminal!
Ojo dey para!!
Mavin is going down!!
Vaeclar, stop calling my phone, you cray!!”
Although the posts were quickly deleted, screenshots circulated widely online, sparking reactions from fans and followers of the Nigerian music industry.
As of the time of reporting, neither Don Jazzy nor Mavin Records had publicly responded to the allegations made by the singer.
Industry Disputes Over Royalties
Crayon’s outburst adds to a growing list of public disputes within the Nigerian music industry involving artistes and alleged unpaid royalties.
In 2023, Big Brother Naija winner and singer Laycon publicly questioned music producer DJ Neptune about royalties from the remix of their song Nobody. Laycon stated that the song had been released several years earlier and wondered why payments had still not been settled.
He wrote at the time that the agreement between them should have guaranteed him his share, questioning why the royalties were yet to be paid even after four years.
Similarly, singer Harrysong accused fellow artiste Kcee of withholding royalties and unreleased songs during their time working together.
In a live video on Instagram, Harrysong described his experience as difficult, alleging that he struggled financially throughout the seven years he worked under Kcee.
He said that at one point he did not even have a bed or mattress in his apartment and claimed he had supported Kcee emotionally during challenging periods in the latter’s music career.
Another case involved music producer Napji, who alleged that he contributed to several songs on Davido’s 2020 album A Better Time.
According to Napji, he produced tracks including Fem, Jowo, and Sunlight and received an advance payment of N500,000 for each song but was yet to receive royalties or publishing rights.
He later threatened to release additional details about the matter and urged the public to draw Davido’s attention to the issue.
Responding briefly to the allegation, Davido reacted online with a short reply: “Your papa”.
Growing Conversation in the Industry
These incidents have fueled ongoing conversations about transparency, contract terms and royalty payments within the Nigerian music industry.
As the industry continues to expand globally, many observers believe clearer agreements and better financial accountability between artistes and record labels will be essential to avoid future disputes.
For now, Crayon’s accusations against Don Jazzy and Mavin Records remain unaddressed publicly, leaving fans and industry watchers waiting to see whether either side will provide further clarification on the situation.
