Nollywood actress and social media personality Iyabo Ojo has finally addressed the public backlash that followed her viral video commending the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), firmly stating that her actions were motivated purely by patriotism and not by financial reward or political influence.
The video, which showcased recent infrastructural improvements at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, quickly gained traction online. However, it also triggered mixed reactions, particularly because of Ojo’s known involvement in political advocacy. Many social media users questioned whether she had been sponsored by the government or contracted by FAAN, sparking widespread debate.
In response to the growing controversy, FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, issued an official clarification, debunking claims that the actress was paid or appointed as an ambassador.
“Iyabo Ojo was not ‘awarded a gig’ by FAAN, nor is she an ambassador. She was only asked to raise awareness on transformational initiatives under this same Tinubu administration at the airport while shooting a movie scene. There was no financial incentive,” Kuku stated.
Following the clarification, Ojo also took to her Instagram page to give her own detailed account of the incident. In a strongly worded post, the actress explained that her praise for the airport upgrades stemmed from her genuine love for Nigeria and her desire to promote positive developments whenever she encounters them.
“I’m Nigerian. And I’m a voice. When I see progress — airports upgraded, roads rebuilt, systems improved — I shout it from the rooftops, if need be, not because I’m paid, not because I’m political, but because I feel it and I want good for my country,” she wrote.
She further disclosed that she was on a movie set at the airport when FAAN officials approached her, asking if she could help share the visible improvements with the public.
“FAAN approached me: You’ve seen the changes, please help us spread the word. So I did. FOR FREE. No fee. No contract. Just love for Nigeria,” Ojo added.
The actress emphasised that her actions should not be misconstrued as political alignment or endorsement of any particular administration. According to her, she simply acknowledges progress wherever she sees it and will always speak positively about good initiatives, regardless of who is in power.
“I praise GOOD — not government, and if the government does good, I’ll praise them too. My loyalty? To my country. Always,” she stated.
Ojo also addressed criticisms from those who felt her past political positions conflicted with her current stance. She maintained that her views remain consistent, stressing that she supports any effort geared towards national growth and development.
“I’ll work with any political party — as long as it’s about building a better tomorrow for our dear nation. No hate. No agenda. Just hands joined,” she concluded.
The actress’s explanation has since sparked fresh conversations online, with supporters applauding her transparency and patriotic spirit. Many fans commended her for using her platform to promote positive change, while urging others to avoid jumping to conclusions.
However, some critics remain sceptical, insisting that public figures must tread carefully when engaging in activities that could be interpreted as political messaging. They argue that, given Nigeria’s highly charged political environment, even well-meaning actions can be misread.
Despite the differing opinions, Ojo’s stance underscores a broader debate about the role of celebrities in public discourse and national development. As influential figures, their voices often carry significant weight, shaping perceptions and driving conversations around governance, infrastructure, and social progress.
By choosing to clarify her position, Iyabo Ojo has reinforced her commitment to openness and accountability, while reaffirming her dedication to Nigeria’s growth. Whether her explanation will fully quell the controversy remains to be seen, but for now, she has made it clear that her intentions were rooted in patriotism, not politics.
