Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress and director Oby Kechere, widely remembered for her memorable role in the popular comedy film Aki na Ukwa. Her passing has left colleagues, fans, and industry stakeholders in deep shock.

The news of her death was officially confirmed by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), which announced it through a statement shared on its verified social media page. According to the guild, Kechere passed away on Monday, 27 April 2026, after battling a prolonged illness.

In its tribute, the guild described her as a committed professional who contributed significantly to the growth and unity of the organisation, especially within the Abuja chapter where she served in a leadership capacity.

The statement also highlighted her academic background as a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, noting her dedication to both creative excellence and industry development.

Oby Kechere earned widespread recognition in Nollywood during the early 2000s, a period when the industry was rapidly expanding and gaining international attention. She became particularly popular for her role as “Ms Koi Koi” in Aki na Ukwa, a performance that endeared her to audiences across Nigeria and beyond.

Beyond that iconic role, she built an impressive portfolio in both acting and directing. Her film credits include titles such as GSM Wahala, American Husband, August Meeting, Gone Forever, Ekete, and Safe Journey.

She was known not only for her on-screen presence but also for her work behind the camera, contributing to storytelling and production in various capacities.

Colleagues in the industry have continued to pay tribute, describing her as a disciplined and passionate filmmaker who helped shape early Nollywood narratives. Many have also noted her willingness to mentor younger practitioners and support professional standards within the guild.

Her death adds to the growing list of losses within the Nigerian entertainment industry in recent years, leaving a gap in a generation of filmmakers who played key roles in Nollywood’s formative years.

Oby Kechere is remembered as a talented actress, dedicated director, and respected guild member whose contributions to Nigerian cinema will continue to be celebrated for years to come.
