Renowned Nigerian actor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has officially released the trailer for his much-anticipated historical fantasy series, Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens, heightening excitement among fans of African epic storytelling. The newly unveiled trailer offers a glimpse into a dramatic world filled with power struggles, emotional conflict, and the relentless quest for survival.
The series serves as a sequel to Afolayan’s critically acclaimed and award-winning film Anikulapo, which captivated audiences with its rich cultural narrative and supernatural themes. This time, the story expands into a six-episode series set to premiere globally on Netflix on January 30, further deepening the universe first introduced in the film.
Sharing the trailer on his social media platforms, Afolayan accompanied the post with a detailed caption that teased the tone and direction of the new installment. He wrote, “Official trailer. Anikulapo – The Ghoul Awakens A Kunle Afolayan series. Once power is awakened, it demands a price. From Oyo to foreign lands, love is tested, and loyalties are shaken. This season, survival is the real crown, and everything you think you know will be questioned.
“Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens arrives on January 30, only on @naijaonnetflix.”
The trailer suggests that the series will raise the stakes significantly, building on the themes of destiny and consequence that defined the original film. Viewers are once again drawn into a world where supernatural forces intersect with human ambition, and where the pursuit of power comes at a heavy cost.
At the centre of the story is Saro, a character who previously defied death itself. Having returned from the grave with the extraordinary ability to resurrect the dead, Saro finds himself navigating even more dangerous paths in the series. His gift, rather than being a blessing alone, becomes a burden that attracts enemies, tests alliances, and places him in constant danger.
As Saro journeys through unfamiliar territories, he is forced to confront moral dilemmas, political intrigue, and personal losses. The narrative hints at intense battles, shifting loyalties, and emotional trials that will challenge not only Saro’s strength but also his humanity.
Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens was filmed in Ghana, marking a notable cross-border collaboration. The project was produced in partnership with the Ghanaian National Film Authority, reinforcing its pan-African identity and showcasing a blend of West African cultural elements. The setting expands beyond the Oyo Empire, introducing foreign lands that add depth and complexity to the storyline.
The series features a diverse ensemble cast, bringing together both familiar faces and new talents. Cast members include Okusaga Adeoluwa, popular content creator and actress Kiekie, veteran actor Antar Laniyan, and seasoned performer Saidi Balogun, among others. Their performances are expected to enrich the narrative and give life to the complex characters within the story.
Thematically, the series explores power, loyalty, love, and survival, all framed within a richly detailed historical and cultural context. By drawing inspiration from Yoruba mythology and African history, Afolayan continues his tradition of telling authentic African stories with global appeal.
With its Netflix release scheduled for January 30, Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens is already generating strong anticipation. Fans of the original film and new viewers alike are eager to see how the story unfolds, as the series promises to challenge expectations and redefine what it means to wear the crown when survival itself becomes the ultimate prize.
