A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of Latif Ayodele, personal trainer to British boxing star Anthony Joshua, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.
Kayode, a 46-year-old driver, was arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 2, 2026, with Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun presiding over the matter.
He is facing a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and negligent driving, following the fatal accident that reportedly occurred along a highway in Ogun State.
According to the charge sheet, Kayode is accused of dangerous driving causing death, an offence contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State. The prosecution also accused him of reckless and negligent driving under Section 6(1) of the same Act.
Other charges include driving without due care, resulting in bodily harm and property damage, contrary to Section 7(1), as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence, an offence under Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.
During proceedings on Tuesday, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, applied for an adjournment of the case.
He told the court that the prosecution needed time to duplicate the case file and transmit it to the Ogun State Attorney General’s Office through the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
However, the defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the application, arguing that the defence team was fully prepared to proceed with the trial and urging the court to allow the matter continue without delay.
After listening to arguments from both sides, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s request, stating that the court deemed it necessary for proper legal guidance to be obtained before proceeding further. Consequently, the case was adjourned to February 25, 2026, for continuation.
The court also ruled on the issue of bail, granting Kayode bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties required to perfect the bail conditions. The magistrate stressed that the sureties must be responsible individuals with verifiable means.
The tragic accident has continued to attract public attention, particularly due to its connection to world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua, whose camp lost two key members in the incident. As the case progresses, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see how justice is served in the matter.
