A Nigerian Catholic priest, Reverend Father Kelvin Ugwu, has ignited widespread debate across religious and social media spaces after making a bold declaration on same-sex marriage and Catholic doctrine. The outspoken cleric stated emphatically: “I will leave the Catholic Church the day it’ll ever permit same-sex marriage.”
Fr. Ugwu, who is known for his strong conservative theological views and frequent online commentary, made the statement while reacting to ongoing global conversations about sexuality, inclusivity, and doctrinal reform within the Roman Catholic Church. His remarks, shared via his verified social media platform, quickly went viral, drawing both support and backlash from Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
According to the priest, his position is rooted not in personal animosity but in unwavering commitment to what he described as unchanging Catholic teaching. He argued that same-sex marriage fundamentally contradicts biblical doctrine and the Church’s long-standing understanding of marriage as a sacrament between a man and a woman.
“The Catholic Church is not a democracy,” Fr. Ugwu wrote, stressing that doctrine cannot be reshaped to align with cultural trends or political pressure. He further warned that any attempt to redefine marriage within Catholicism would represent a departure from apostolic tradition, not progress.
The comments come amid heightened global scrutiny of the Vatican following Pope Francis’ more pastoral tone toward LGBTQ+ individuals, including blessings for same-sex couples under specific non-liturgical contexts. While the Vatican has clarified that such gestures do not equate to approval of same-sex marriage, critics and supporters continue to debate the implications.
Fr. Ugwu positioned himself firmly among conservative clergy who fear that moral relativism could erode the Church’s doctrinal foundation. “Once the Church begins to bless what Scripture condemns, it ceases to be the Church Christ founded,” he added.
Supporters have praised the priest for what they call courage and doctrinal clarity, especially within Africa, where Christianity remains largely conservative. Others, however, accuse him of intolerance and failing to reflect the Church’s call to compassion and inclusion.
The controversy underscores a growing ideological divide within global Christianity — between preserving tradition and responding to modern social realities. Whether Fr. Ugwu’s stance represents the future or the resistance of Catholicism, one thing is certain: his words have intensified an already heated conversation.
