Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has officially dropped the trailer for the highly anticipated Anikulapo Season 2, titled The Ghoul Awakens.

The announcement, made on January 4 via his Instagram page, teased the next chapter in the Anikulapo saga, with the season set to premiere on January 30, 2026.

Fans have been eagerly waiting since the release of the first season, Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre in 2024, and the new trailer promises to expand the universe even further across Nigeria and Ghana.

Building on the rich narrative of power, destiny, and supernatural intrigue introduced in the 2022 Netflix film, Season 2 deepens the saga with darker themes and more complex storylines.

The trailer sets the tone for the season with the tagline: “Once power is awakened, it demands a price.” Central to the plot is Saro, the original Anikulapo, who wields a mystical gourd capable of resurrecting the dead. As the title suggests, the season introduces a mythical demonic figure, The Ghoul, derived from Arab folklore, which haunts dreams, graveyards, and leads unsuspecting victims into danger.

Season 2 brings back familiar faces, including Sola Sobowale, Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Oyindamola Sanni, Aisha Lawal, Moji Afolayan, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Ronke Oshodi-Oke, Taiwo Hassan, and Lateef Adedimeji

They are joined by new additions such as Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori (Kiekie), Teniola Aladese, Antar Laniyan, Joke Muyiwa, Saidi Balogun, Adeoluwa Okusaga (Saga), and Tayo Faniran, hinting at expanded storylines with fresh conflicts, alliances, and challenges.

Production for Season 2 is larger in scale, moving beyond the Film Village in Igbojaye, Oyo State, to include Cape Coast, Ghana.

This cross-national collaboration with Ghana’s National Film Authority allows the story to explore broader geopolitical dynamics, weaving historical elements such as early interactions with Western traders, colonial influences, and social hierarchies into the narrative.

Viewers can expect heightened stakes across multiple dimensions. Love, loyalty, and survival are tested as the forces of good and evil clash, while the supernatural elements remain central to the storyline.

The trailer hints at mysterious disappearances, dream hauntings, and intense confrontations with mystical forces. Every resurrection, every claim to power, carries weighty consequences, questioning whether immortality can exist without a cost.

Season 2 also promises to expand the political and cultural dimensions of the story. The presence of foreign figures and new borders suggests interactions beyond local kingdoms, highlighting struggles for control, loyalty, and influence.

Human desires, betrayals, and moral dilemmas are expected to intertwine with supernatural threats, creating a layered narrative that combines mystical adventure with relatable human drama.

Visually, the trailer is striking, offering glimpses of grander landscapes and detailed production design. Action sequences, suspenseful moments, and morally complex decisions dominate the preview, making it clear that the stakes are higher than ever.

Fans can also anticipate darker explorations of revenge, ambition, and the consequences of tampering with life and death.

As the premiere date approaches, excitement continues to build. With Anikulapo Season 2: The Ghoul Awakens, Kunle Afolayan expands the Anikulapo universe both narratively and visually.

The new season promises a thrilling combination of supernatural adventure, political intrigue, and human drama, ensuring that fans of the saga will be captivated from the first scene.
