The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has described former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s survival in a fatal road accident as an act of God’s mercy.
Adeboye made the statement on Sunday while delivering a sermon during the church’s monthly thanksgiving service. While teaching on divine preservation and mercy, the cleric referenced the boxer’s recent ordeal, using it to illustrate what he described as God’s intervention in human affairs.
According to reports shared during the service, Anthony Joshua was involved in a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close associates. The crash reportedly occurred last Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of the country’s busiest highways.
The accident led to the deaths of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both described as close friends and members of Joshua’s team. Despite the severity of the crash, Joshua escaped with minor injuries, a development that has since drawn widespread attention and reactions.
The 36-year-old boxer was said to have been hospitalised briefly before being discharged on New Year’s Eve. He later returned to the United Kingdom on Saturday, following medical clearance.
While addressing the congregation, Pastor Adeboye anchored his message on a biblical reference, stressing that survival in life-threatening situations is not always a result of human wisdom or ability.
“Lamentations 3:22–23 says it is by the mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed,” Adeboye said. “We are alive because of the mercies of the Lord, not because of cleverness.”
He went on to reference reports surrounding the circumstances of the accident, highlighting a detail that has fueled further discussion.
“I read in the newspapers yesterday that our boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, exchanged seats with someone before the accident,” Adeboye stated. “The people he exchanged seats with died. I don’t know why, but the mercy of God said someone would still be alive today.”
Adeboye’s remarks immediately resonated with many worshippers, who viewed the incident as a powerful illustration of divine intervention. His comments have since circulated widely on social media platforms, generating conversations around faith, destiny, and spiritual protection.
Online reactions have been mixed, with many expressing gratitude for Joshua’s survival and offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Others described the incident as a sobering reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of faith.
Some social media users echoed Adeboye’s sentiments, interpreting the boxer’s escape as evidence of God’s mercy at work, while others urged caution in drawing spiritual conclusions from tragic events. Nonetheless, the message has added a spiritual dimension to an already emotional story.
Anthony Joshua, who remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated sports figures globally, has not publicly commented on Adeboye’s remarks as of the time of reporting. The boxer has also maintained relative silence on the details of the accident, focusing instead on recovery and returning to normal activities.
As discussions continue, the tragedy has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns on major Nigerian highways, particularly the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which has recorded several fatal accidents over the years.
Pastor Adeboye’s comments, however, have shifted the focus toward reflection on mercy, gratitude, and the fragility of life, reinforcing his message that survival, especially in moments of grave danger, should not be taken for granted.
