Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was among mourners on Sunday as funeral prayers were held in London for two of his close associates who died in a recent road accident in Nigeria.
The British-Nigerian sports star attended the service at the London Central Mosque in memory of his longtime personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami. The pair lost their lives in a crash that occurred last week on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway.
Joshua, who was also involved in the accident, escaped with minor injuries. The incident happened on December 29, and the 36-year-old boxer was treated and discharged from hospital on New Year’s Eve before returning to the United Kingdom.
Footage from the funeral prayer, now circulating on social media, showed Joshua clad in black, standing quietly among other attendees as Islamic rites were observed.
Prior to the burial, Joshua had shared photos of himself with the families of the deceased, posting the caption: “My Brother’s Keeper ❤️🕊️❤️.”
Meanwhile, authorities in Nigeria confirmed that the driver involved in the crash, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid licence. The charges were filed by the Ogun State Police Command on Friday.
The matter has been adjourned until January 20 by a magistrate’s court. Although bail was set at ₦5 million, the accused remains in custody as he works to meet the bail conditions.
Joshua, who has strong ties to Nigeria despite being born in England, regularly visits Sagamu in Ogun State. He was in the country last year, where he met with celebrities and presented President Bola Tinubu with a signed boxing glove.
The boxer’s latest visit to Nigeria came shortly after he knocked out Jake Paul in an exhibition heavyweight contest at the Kaseya Centre in Miami.
