The controversy surrounding Pastor Chris Okafor of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministry has taken a dramatic turn as a woman, Agnes Bessem Okafor, publicly stepped forward claiming to be his former wife.
Her emotional and explosive statement comes at a time when the cleric is already embroiled in a high-profile legal dispute with Nollywood actress Doris Ogala, who recently slammed him with a ₦1 billion lawsuit over an alleged failed marriage promise.
In her statement, Agnes alleged that she married Pastor Okafor at the tender age of 18, describing herself as an “innocent prime” youth at the time. According to her, the marriage was not secretive but formally conducted, with witnesses who are still alive and capable of testifying to its legitimacy.
One of the most disturbing revelations in her account was the alleged discovery of a concealed marriage certificate shortly after their wedding. Agnes claimed the document indicated that the pastor had been married before—a fact she said was deliberately hidden from her.
“After the wedding, I discovered under the bed a wedding certificate which revealed that he was once married. I cried. I asked him, he denied. The marriage certificate is still available. You’ll go to jail for that. You lied to me, married me and kept me in your house just to be a baby-making machine.”
Agnes, who is a mother of four, accused the pastor of emotional manipulation and attempting to erase her and their children from his public and ministerial life. She strongly condemned what she described as his effort to deny their existence, calling it a “shame to the body of Christ.”
“This man took me in my prime, in my youth, as a wife, not as a side chick… They are ashamed of the things he comes out to say about his own children. It is a shame to the body of Christ.”
Clarifying the end of their marriage, Agnes insisted she was the one who walked away, citing years of alleged disgrace tied to the cleric’s conduct and ministry.
“If I left this man, I left him because I could not match and operate in his own ways… I left you because of the shame and disgrace you brought to the body of Christ for so many years.”
Meanwhile, Pastor Okafor has issued a public apology to his congregation amid the growing backlash. However, critics argue that the apology appears more like an attempt to “gain public sympathy” than a sincere act of accountability, as the allegations against him continue to pile up.
