Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun (AY) has addressed the growing reactions surrounding his recent social media post following the tragic road accident involving world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua.

Earlier reports by Kemi Filani revealed that Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two of his close associates. In the wake of the heartbreaking incident, AY had shared an emotional message online, lamenting how Nigeria continues to lose precious lives due to unsafe roads and systemic failures. His post sparked intense debate, with some interpreting his message as an attempt to excuse reckless driving.

In a detailed clarification shared on his Instagram page, AY firmly stated that his original post was never meant to absolve anyone of responsibility. According to him, reckless driving undeniably costs lives, but conversations about road safety in Nigeria must go beyond placing blame on individuals alone.

AY explained that his message was a wake-up call to highlight the deeper issues affecting road safety in the country. He pointed out that Nigeria records frequent road accidents, and when they occur, fatalities are often inevitable due to weak systems. He listed poor road conditions, inadequate lighting and signage, weak traffic enforcement, and slow or nonexistent emergency response services as critical factors worsening tragic outcomes.

He emphasized that while these challenges may not directly cause accidents, they often “turn mistakes into funerals.” The comedian stressed that accountability must exist on both sides — individual responsibility and government failure.

Clarifying further, AY stated that his comments were not politically motivated and should not be viewed as an attack on any individual or institution. Instead, he described his message as a plea for change, especially for the countless Nigerians who lose their lives on the roads without public attention.

In his words:

“Let me clarify, with respect. Yes, reckless driving costs lives. Personal responsibility on the road is crucial and must always be acknowledged. But my post last night was never about excusing recklessness or blaming one party for one incident… Two things can be true at the same time. People can make wrong decisions. And a country can still fail its people.”

AY concluded by urging Nigerians not to normalize loss, stressing the need for accountability, improved infrastructure, and respect for human life, while offering condolences to families affected by the tragedy.
