Human rights activist and outspoken social media commentator, Chuks Eric, popularly known as @ChuksEricE on X (formerly Twitter), has reportedly been arrested and transferred to Abuja following a petition allegedly filed by Senator Ned Nwoko.
The arrest is believed to be connected to a viral TikTok video made by another individual, which accused the senator of attempting to kill his estranged wife, Regina Daniels. Chuks Eric was said to have only reposted the video, not created it.
Alleged Setup and Arrest
According to a family member who spoke with SaharaReporters on Sunday, Chuks was allegedly lured out of his residence on Friday night after receiving a phone call accusing him of stealing aluminium windows.
“Someone called him last night and accused him of stealing aluminium windows. When he got there, they arrested him and took him to a police station,” the family source said.
The family disclosed that investigators later determined that Chuks was neither involved in the alleged theft nor the originator of the controversial social media post.
“They later found out that he wasn’t the one who made the post; that he only reposted someone else’s content,” the source added.
Petition Allegedly From Abuja
Despite reportedly establishing his innocence, the operatives allegedly released Chuks that same night but instructed him to accompany them to Abuja the following day.
“They released him that night and told him to follow them the next day, which is today, to Abuja,” the source said.
As of Sunday afternoon, however, Chuks’ whereabouts remained unknown, raising serious concerns among his family, lawyers, and fellow activists.
“We don’t know his whereabouts now. No one has heard from him yet,” the source told SaharaReporters.
The family further alleged that the arrest was based on a petition written by a serving senator, reportedly originating from Abuja.
“He was petitioned by a senator, and the petition came from Abuja,” the source claimed.
Distressing Messages and Silence
A close associate revealed that Chuks sent a message late Saturday night requesting the contact of a prominent lawyer. Although the message was seen, a reply was only sent Sunday morning. After receiving the lawyer’s number, Chuks stopped responding.
Repeated attempts to reach him failed, as both of his known phone lines were switched off. His last post on X was made over 20 hours earlier, which associates described as highly unusual for the activist.
Sister Confirms Petition by Senator
Chuks’ sister later confirmed that a petition had indeed been written against him by Senator Ned Nwoko, allegedly linking him to the viral TikTok video.
She stated that the petition wrongly identified Chuks as the individual in the video, despite obvious physical differences between them.
According to her, the TikTok creator behind the video is known as @liaroftiktok, a completely different individual who has since been seen online apologising to the senator.
“This clearly shows that liaroftiktok is not Chuks Eric. They are two entirely different individuals,” an associate said.
Public Outrage and Calls for Accountability
The development has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with activists condemning what they described as harassment, abuse of power, and suppression of free expression.
Several users questioned why Chuks was singled out for arrest for reposting content that had already been shared by multiple blogs and platforms.
Activists called on the Nigeria Police Force to uphold professionalism and due process.
“We urge the police to carefully compare the individual in the video with Chuks Eric and to carry out their duties with diligence, fairness, and respect for due process,” an associate said.
Human Rights Lawyer Reacts
Prominent human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong also raised the alarm after discovering a message left by Chuks.
“I just noticed that @ChuksEricE left a distressing message for me last night,” he wrote on X.
“I have seen posts stating that he has been arrested by the police over a petition by a serial petitioner, Senator Ned Nwoko.”
“Anyone with information regarding where he is being detained should contact me,” he added.
In a viral message reportedly sent by Chuks before his arrest, he wrote:
“I’m in serious trouble ooo.
Ned Nwoko petitioned me over that post I made of that young man who claimed Ned Nwoko gave him money to go after Regina Daniels.”
