Military officers in Benin Republic have seized power, announcing the removal of the country’s civilian government in a televised statement on Sunday.
The soldiers, identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation, declared that the president, along with all elected and appointed officials, had been stripped of their positions.
They further revealed that every state institution had been dissolved.
President Patrice Talon, who has governed since 2016, had previously stated he would step down in April 2026 after the next presidential election. His administration had faced heightened tension in recent months, especially after the September 2024 arrest of Djimon Tevoedjre — commander of the republican guard and Talon’s chief security officer — over an attempted coup plot.
With this takeover, Benin Republic becomes the latest country in West Africa to fall under military control.
The region has witnessed a wave of coups in recent years. Just last month, soldiers in Guinea-Bissau took charge of the government amid political chaos after President Umaro Embaló and main challenger Fernando Dias both declared victory before official results were released.
Other West African nations currently ruled by military juntas include Burkina Faso (2022), Guinea (2021), Mali (2020), and Niger (2023).
