The 2025 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) celebrated the finest talents in African cinema, recognizing filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals for their outstanding contributions.
The 21st edition of the prestigious awards ceremony was held on Sunday at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, bringing together Africa’s top creative minds in film.
One of the evening’s standout winners was the multilingual thriller “3 Cold Dishes,” co-produced by Burna Boy and Osas Ighodaro. The film claimed Best Nigerian Film, while young talent Ruby Akubueze was honored as Best Young/Promising Actor.
Veteran actor Lateef Adedimeji earned the Best Actor in a Leading Role award for his compelling performance in “Lisabi: The Uprising,” while Tina Mba impressed the jury with her role in “The Serpent Gift,” taking home Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
The South African film “The Heart Is a Muscle” dominated the night on multiple fronts. It won the top prize for Best Film, alongside awards for Cinematography, Editing, and Best Debut Feature for director Imran Hamdulay.
Burkina Faso also left a strong mark with “Katanga: Dance of the Scorpions,” which was recognized as Best Film in an African Language. The movie additionally won Best Screenplay and Best Costume Design, highlighting the country’s growing influence in African cinema.
Other notable winners included Florence Mariserena, who was named Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Small Gods”, and Clemento Ashietey, who took home Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “Last Stop.”
The ceremony also celebrated African filmmakers in the diaspora, with Ancestral Visions of the Future (Lesotho/France/Germany) winning Best Film by an African Living Abroad, while Jamaica’s “Romeo N Juliet 4EVA” secured Best Diaspora Narrative Feature.
Short films and documentaries were also recognized. Kenya’s “The Missing Piece” won the Eferé Ozako Award for Best Short Film, while the DRC’s “The Journey East” claimed Best Documentary.
In addition to the awards, the ceremony paid tribute to African film practitioners who passed away between January and November 2025 and featured captivating musical performances, making it a night of both celebration and remembrance.
