Renowned filmmaker Biodun Stephen has advised parents not to surrender their authority to their children, even in situations where the children become the family’s primary earners.

In a recent post on social media, Stephen stressed that a child’s financial contributions should not undermine parental boundaries or weaken the principles of good parenting.

“Poverty does not diminish the role of good parenting. That your child is the breadwinner doesn’t mean the baton of parenting is now the child’s, as long as the said child, under the law and your household rules, is still recognised as a child,” she wrote.

Stephen pointed out that while life circumstances may sometimes result in children becoming the main providers, parents must continue to enforce discipline and guidance.

“Of course, life happens such that the child may become the breadwinner, it doesn’t mean as parents we dance to the tune of that child forgetting our roles in the first place,” she added.

Her advice was inspired by a documentary she recently watched, which explored how parents often lose moral authority once a child starts providing for the family. She noted that this trend is visible both in real life and online, particularly on social media platforms.

“Saw a documentary that triggered me so, and I see how this plays out here, even on SM Street. Parents, play your role regardless,” she concluded, urging parents to uphold their responsibilities irrespective of financial dynamics in the household.

By emphasizing the importance of maintaining authority, Stephen highlighted that good parenting goes beyond financial considerations, insisting that respect and guidance should remain central in every parent-child relationship.
