Nollywood star Mercy Aigbe has become the center of public conversation following the lavish burial ceremony she hosted in honor of her late mother.

Months after announcing her mother’s passing, the actress finally laid her to rest on Friday, November 28th, and honored her memory with an extravagant party on Saturday—an event that quickly dominated social media discussions.

The ceremony drew massive attention not only because of its scale but also due to the impressive turnout from the Nollywood industry. Celebrities, colleagues, and public figures showed up in large numbers to support Aigbe during her emotional moment. Notably in attendance were Olori Ashley, the fourth wife of the Ooni of Ife, and former House of Representatives member Abike Dabiri, alongside several other distinguished guests.

One of the highlights of the night was the abundance of souvenirs and generous items shared among guests. At one point, a party attendee arrived with cartons of beverages to distribute, a gesture that further emphasized the grandeur of the celebration.

The lavishness of the event sparked mixed reactions online. A social media user, damelanin_, commented, “The concept of extravagant merriment burial for Africans still confuses me.”

Another critic, ms_omawumi, added, “I hope these people save for rainy days?” Meanwhile, atitebiseungrace stirred unexpected humor by stating, “I miss Bobrisky.”

Before the ceremony, Mercy Aigbe penned an emotional message to her late mother, praying for divine strength to navigate the difficult period. She described her mother as “a blessing, a quiet light, and a gentle guide.” The actress first announced the heartbreaking loss in September, sharing a candlelight image with the caption, “RIP mum.”

Aigbe later expressed gratitude to fans and colleagues for their overwhelming support, noting how emotionally and mentally exhausting it was to plan a burial. She opened up about the pain of “visiting cemeteries, looking at vaults, and checking coffins,” describing the experience as indescribable.
