Nigerian reality TV star and entrepreneur Mercy Eke has sparked fresh conversation online after openly declaring that she is willing to have children outside marriage if life takes her in that direction. The Big Brother Naija Season 4 winner made this revelation during a recent podcast appearance, where she spoke candidly about motherhood, societal expectations, and her personal choices regarding family.
According to Mercy Eke, while she is not intentionally planning to get pregnant before marriage, she would never consider terminating a pregnancy solely because she is unmarried. The media personality emphasized that becoming a mother remains one of her biggest dreams, regardless of her marital status.
In her words,
“I won’t go the extra miles to get pregnant out of wedlock. But if it just happens, I would leave it and I would have my baby. I want three kids; two girls and one boy or three girls. I love female children.”
Mercy further explained that the negative societal judgment often associated with single mothers in Nigeria does not affect all women the same way. She argued that the stigma is largely directed at women who are struggling financially, not those who are already successful or independent.
She said, “Even if don’t get married, I would still have kids. What most people don’t know is that the stigma of being a single mother only applies to women who don’t have things going well for them.”
The reality star added that financially stable single mothers often command admiration rather than mockery, noting that many of them still attract suitors effortlessly. “The women [single mothers] that are shattering glasses, men are begging them for marriage. I can get married tomorrow if I want to. But what I want in a man, I have not seen it. It’s not like there is no suitor. There are plenty… So, even if I have a baby, I would still see a man,” she continued.
Mercy Eke’s remarks have since fueled widespread reactions on social media, with many debating her stance on single motherhood, independence, and modern-day relationship dynamics.
