Renowned Bauchi traditional musician, John Zuya, widely known by his stage name, John Mai Molo, has tragically passed away after allegedly consuming poisoned food in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after his return from Lagos on October 16, 2025, where he had performed at several cultural events.
The late musician, celebrated for his powerful voice and rich traditional sounds, was said to have felt unwell after eating a meal suspected to be poisoned.
Witnesses said he suddenly collapsed and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for urgent medical attention. Sadly, he was confirmed dead by doctors upon arrival.
Confirming the heartbreaking news, one of his close associates and fellow musician, Emma Wakili, took to Facebook to mourn the singer’s passing. Wakili revealed that Mai Molo died at about 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
In his words, “John Mai Molo is gone. He passed away around 7:00 a.m. this morning after eating poisoned food. This is a sad loss for Bauchi’s music community and the entire North. He was more than a colleague; he was a brother and a mentor to many.”
The tragic death of the popular musician has sparked widespread grief across Bauchi State and beyond. Fans, friends, and fellow artists have continued to flood social media with emotional tributes, describing Mai Molo as a talented and humble performer who brought traditional music to life with his passion and creativity.
Authorities have since deposited his body at the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death. Security agencies are also said to be investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspected poisoning.
John Mai Molo was one of Bauchi’s most respected traditional musicians, known for his energetic performances at cultural festivals, weddings, and community events. His songs celebrated the richness of Hausa culture and carried strong messages about unity, morality, and social consciousness.
Many of his fans have described his death as an irreplaceable loss to the cultural music scene in Northern Nigeria.
A resident of Tafawa Balewa, who spoke to Daily Post on condition of anonymity, said, “Mai Molo was loved by everyone.
He represented the heart of our music and tradition. It’s painful that someone so full of life could die in such a mysterious way. We pray those responsible are found.”
As investigations continue, the Bauchi State government is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, community leaders and musicians have called for a thorough probe into the suspected poisoning to ensure justice is served.
John Mai Molo’s legacy in traditional music remains profound, and his songs will continue to echo across northern Nigeria’s cultural landscape for years to come.
