Nigerian singer Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has opened up about his lifelong struggle with fear of failure, revealing how his father’s harsh words during his childhood shaped his early experiences and mindset.
In a candid interview with veteran media personality Frank Edoho, Spyro recounted that his father often used negative utterances while disciplining him, which led him to internalize a sense of inadequacy.
“I thought I was going to die broke. I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure,” Spyro recalled.
He explained that growing up under such pressure affected his academic performance, with poor grades in secondary school compounding his self-doubt.
Even after gaining admission into a university, he confessed that the psychological effects of atychiphobia the fear of failure made him question his ability to complete his degree.
Spyro revealed that his fear extended beyond academics. At a point, he nearly gave up on his dream of becoming a musician.
He had already ventured into interior design, contemplating a complete career shift. It was only after he developed a personal relationship with God that he began to overcome the paralyzing fear instilled by his early experiences.
The singer eventually broke through the music scene with his viral hit, Who Is Your Guy, in 2022. The remix of the song featuring Tiwa Savage in 2023 further cemented his position in the Nigerian music industry.
Later that year, the track earned the Best Collaboration award at the 16th Headies Awards, marking a major milestone in his career. Spyro admitted that the success of the song provided both personal and professional validation, helping him rebuild his confidence.
Despite his rise to fame, Spyro noted that the journey was never smooth. He emphasized the importance of resilience and faith in navigating personal struggles.
“Do not let past criticisms or failures define you. Your breakthrough can come when you least expect it,” he advised, reflecting on his own journey from near discouragement to musical stardom.
In addition to his music career, Spyro continues to inspire fans through his candid discussions about mental health and overcoming adversity.
By sharing his experiences, he aims to motivate others who may feel trapped by fear or external negativity. His story highlights that success often comes not only from talent but from perseverance, faith, and the ability to rise above personal challenges.
