Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan is set to host a 10-day intensive residency programme for aspiring filmmakers across Oyo State from October 6 to 15. The training, titled “Emerging Stories,” aims to equip participants with practical skills and mentorship to thrive in the filmmaking industry.
Organized in collaboration with the Oyo State Government and Afolayan’s KAP Film & Television Academy, the residency seeks to develop new talent capable of elevating African cinema on the global stage. The programme will bring together aspiring filmmakers from all 33 local government areas of Oyo State and provide hands-on experience across various aspects of film production.
Top industry veterans, including legendary filmmaker Tunde Kelani and celebrated actress Joke Silva, will mentor participants throughout the residency, sharing invaluable insights from their decades of experience.
Speaking about the initiative, Afolayan emphasized that the residency is designed to go beyond teaching technical skills.
“This residency is much more about technical skills; it’s about instilling the passion and discipline required to become a successful storyteller,” he said. He added that the programme’s goal is to nurture a new generation of filmmakers who can tell compelling African stories and contribute to the global recognition of the continent’s cinema.
Oyo State Governor Oluseyi Makinde praised the programme as a reflection of the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and cultural development.
“The programme reflects our commitment to empowering youth and positioning Oyo State as a premier hub for creativity and innovation,” the governor said. “A strategic partnership with KAP Academy will significantly boost our efforts towards opening significant opportunities both for our young people and for the cultural economy of our state.”
The residency will take place at Afolayan’s KAP Film Village and Resort in Igbojaye, Oyo, which was officially unveiled in April. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to provide an immersive learning environment for emerging filmmakers, combining practical training with mentorship and exposure to the broader film industry.
Ademola Ojo, Oyo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, commended the selection process for the residency, noting that the participants demonstrated readiness and commitment. “The selected participants across the state have shown readiness for the programme,” he said, highlighting the enthusiasm and potential of young creatives eager to pursue careers in filmmaking.
Over the 10 days, participants will engage in workshops, masterclasses, and practical exercises covering directing, scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, and production management. The programme will also foster collaboration and networking among participants, helping to build a strong community of emerging storytellers.
By combining technical training, mentorship from industry veterans, and an emphasis on discipline and passion, Afolayan’s residency aims to set a new standard for filmmaker development in Nigeria. The initiative underscores both the filmmaker’s and the state’s dedication to nurturing talent, promoting cultural growth, and positioning Oyo State as a leading center for creative excellence in Africa.
