Temi Otedola, actress, entrepreneur, and daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, has spoken candidly about her decision to adopt her husband’s surname following her marriage to Afrobeats star Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, widely known as Mr Eazi.
Following her wedding, Temi officially became Temiloluwa Ajibade—a move that quickly attracted attention online.
Many social media users and commentators expressed surprise, arguing that she had distanced herself from the high-profile Otedola name that has long been associated with her public image. Despite the criticism, Temi emphasized that the choice was personal and grounded in her own values.
In a BBC interview on Wednesday, she explained her reasoning behind taking on her husband’s surname.
“I’m now a married woman, and the obvious thing for me was to take my husband’s name. But it’s my decision, and I respect that every woman has the right to choose,” she said.
Temi also highlighted the importance of privacy in her personal life, noting that she has always been deliberate about what she shares with the public.
“Moving in silence allows you to build your own story and share it when you’re ready,” she stated. By choosing discretion, Temi has been able to manage her public persona on her own terms, rather than allowing speculation or social media gossip to define her narrative.
The actress also reflected on the lessons she has learned from her father’s recently released memoir, which chronicles his decades-long journey as an entrepreneur. She praised his resilience and determination in building a business empire from the ground up.
Temi revealed that her father deliberately avoided involving his children directly in his companies, a decision that initially disappointed her but eventually proved to be a valuable life lesson.
“At first I was disappointed, but it turned out to be a blessing. It encouraged us to create our own way,” she said. She added that observing her father navigate challenges with tenacity has been a source of ongoing inspiration, shaping her approach to both business and personal life.
Beyond her reflections on marriage and family, Temi also spoke openly about her privileged upbringing. Unlike some who might downplay their advantages, she stressed the importance of acknowledging them honestly.
“Oh, absolutely. You will never hear me deny it. It’s important for people born into privilege to acknowledge the advantage they’ve had,” she said. By openly recognizing the advantages that came with being part of a wealthy and influential family, Temi has shown a willingness to embrace both responsibility and gratitude.
Through her candid discussion, Temi Otedola has provided insight into her personal choices, her approach to relationships, and her respect for privacy. Her decision to take her husband’s surname is a reflection of her values, illustrating a thoughtful approach to marriage and personal identity, even in the face of public scrutiny.
Temi’s story serves as a reminder that decisions about family, legacy, and personal identity are deeply personal, and that each individual has the right to define their own path, regardless of public opinion.
