Veteran Afro-Juju music legend, Sir Shina Peters, has revealed the extraordinary strategy his team used to reshape his public image after his controversial exit from Prince Adekunle’s band.

The “Ace” crooner shared the story during a candid interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast, explaining how he was branded as mentally unstable to win back public sympathy following intense backlash.

According to Peters, his decision to part ways with Prince Adekunle  whom he described as a father figure  was widely criticized at the time. Many fans and industry insiders accused him of being ungrateful and chasing fame and money at the expense of loyalty.

The negative attention nearly derailed his budding solo career, prompting his team to come up with a daring publicity stunt.

“People protested against me when I left Prince Adekunle’s band because they believed I left my father figure for money,” he recalled.

“Then the owner of my record label and some media heads came up with an idea. They asked me to braid my hair for three days without loosening it, then I wore torn clothes.

After that, they took me to Oyingbo Market to buy ewedu while recording everything. I didn’t even know what they were up to.”

He added that the dramatic act continued in Badagry, where he was instructed to behave like a mentally unstable man at a construction site managed by Julius Berger.

“They told me to act like a madman and eat in public. All of that was done to change people’s narratives and earn empathy from fans,” the music legend said.

The plan, though controversial, worked perfectly. The staged performance made the public reconsider their harsh judgment and transformed him from a perceived betrayer into a misunderstood genius.

Peters said the act marked a turning point in his career, helping him regain acceptance and reestablish himself as a respected solo artiste.

Reflecting on the experience, he noted that the ordeal taught him the importance of strategic branding and public perception in the entertainment industry. “Sometimes, you have to let people see your pain before they understand your story,” he said.

Over the years, Sir Shina Peters has continued to command respect as one of Nigeria’s most influential music icons. With timeless hits like Ace and Shinamania, he successfully fused Afrobeat and Juju into a new sound that defined an era.

The revelation adds another layer to the singer’s storied career, showing the lengths his team went to restore his image and how it shaped the trajectory of Afro-Juju music in Nigeria.
