Former U.S. President Donald Trump has described the newly brokered Gaza peace agreement as the greatest achievement of his political career. Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday night, October 12, while en route to Israel, Trump said the deal “could be the biggest thing I was ever involved in.”
The agreement, which coincides with the scheduled release of the last 20 Israeli hostages held by Hamas on Monday, is aimed at bringing an end to a devastating conflict that has claimed more than 67,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
Trump is expected to address Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, on Monday morning, where he plans to deliver a message of “love and peace for eternity.”
His visit will also include meetings with the families of the freed hostages and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Recalling a rally held in Tel Aviv on Saturday in support of the hostages, Trump said the event which featured his daughter Ivanka Trump, son-in-law Jared Kushner, and envoy Steve Witkoff was “an incredible rally.”
He noted that while the crowd cheered at the mention of his name, they reportedly booed Netanyahu when Witkoff mentioned the Prime Minister.
Trump also expressed excitement about the international peace conference scheduled to take place on Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, which he said shows “the world is united behind this plan.”
Although Netanyahu is not expected to attend, Trump praised the inclusion of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as “a good sign for lasting peace.”
He further claimed that the success of the Gaza deal was tied to his earlier decision to order an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June. According to him, the move weakened Tehran’s support for Hamas and paved the way for Arab and Muslim nations to unite behind the peace process.
